GIVE IT A TWIRL: Flagging master Phillip Bryan heads up this weekend's Tie-Dye clinics
Head out to some of the more popular dance
clubs in larger cities, and you'll most likely spot
a handful of athletic guys spinning vividly col-
ored flags and whipping crowds into a hypnotic
frenzy.
The practice is called flag dancing, and if
you've ever wanted to give the hobby a twirl, you
can tap into visually entrancing moves with a
hands-on workshop offered by Tribesmen Unite!
Dallas this weekend.
"Whether you're a beginner or more
advanced, this workshop will have something for
everyone," says Phillip Bryan, one of the event
organizers.
This isn't the first time Biyan and other flag-
ging devotees have launched instructional flag-
ging events. Last summer, the group filled up tie-
dye and flag design classes with eager new stu-
dents. This year, they're holding a three-day
workshop, which promises to be more intensive.
On Friday, beginning at 8:30 p.m., there will
be a meet-and-greet at Crossroads Market, fol-
lowed by a flagging demonstration at the Village
Station starting at 9 p.m. On Saturday at 11 a.m.,
flag artist George Jagatic of New York's Axis
Dance troupe will head up "Flow," a dance-and-
movement workshop. Later that afternoon is a
class on the fundamentals of flag design and tie-
dye coloring, which will be followed by sewing
assistance and training. The evening finishes up
with a group dance outing at Club One.
Sunday morning, beginning at 11 a.m., Jagatic
and crew wrap up the second part of the dance
technique workshop, and a second tie-dye work-
shop will be offered at 2 p.m. The workshop will
come to a close with a group flag-dance at Club
Seven later that evening.
"When you think about it, you can go online
and buy a pair of pre-designed flags for $130,"
Bryan says. "But taking this workshop, you can
walk away with two customized sets for only
$30."
Bryan and other flagging veterans see this
weekend event as an opportunity to get to know
new faces and share their enthusiasm for this cap-
tivating athleticism.
Two-day Flow workshop is $35; two day Tie-
Dye clinic is $30, which includes materials. For
