McMurry University
Dear McMurry Family,
McMurry University is mainly
about relationships, but it is also about
facilities. Most frequently, on campus
we tend to focus our conversations
about change on members of the
faculty and/or staff or on programs, i.e.,
biology, sociology, or education. But
facilities do make a difference, and
recent renovations and new construc-
tion, plus those planned for the future,
shape the University. I believe we can be
proud of the McMurry campus that is
currently in a state of transition.
Over the past six years, support
from the McMurry Board of Trustees,
alumni, friends, and foundations has
made possible the construction of
Driggers Stadium and Chapin Art Hall,
and the renovation of Hunt P.E. Center,
the United Methodist Student Center,
Cooke Classroom Building, Maedgen
Hall, and three residence halls. Addi-
tionally, much of the campus has been
landscaped - McMurry has trees,
shrubs, and flowers cared for by a
dedicated grounds crew. The jewel in
our campus is Radford, and its renova-
tion for use by the Admissions and
Financial Aid Offices represents the
University's commitment to modern,
well-equipped, and attractive facilities.
All new students now view McMurry
through the eyes of our beautiful
facility featured in this issue of the
Chieftain (See article on Page 14).
This summer we have continued
our commitment to providing facilities
that make learning not just possible,
but also enjoyable. New apartments,
located south of Finch-Gray Science
Building, will become home to 100
upper-class students for fall 2001. They
provide privacy and easy access to the
campus computer network and parking,
attributes of campus life that students
have come to expect. In addition, Gold
Star Residence Hall has been painted
and new carpet laid; the Ellington
Varsity Room constructed in Hunt RE.
Center; and a varsity soccer field built
two blocks from campus. Every year
students return to campus to find
improvements that add value to their
McMurry experience, and this fall will
be no exception.
We are working from a campus
plan designed with recommendations
from trustees, faculty, staff, students,
and alumni. It calls for a more pedes-
trian campus, a larger campus, with
parking on the perimeter, a new eight-
court tennis complex, and a renovated
football stadium. The centerpieces of
this new campus plan are Old Main
and Finch-Gray Science Building, both
of which need to be fully renovated,
with an addition planned for science.
This new campus is a challenge for us,
but I am confident we will rise to this
challenge.
I invite you to come back to
campus. Walk the grounds, visit the
computer and science labs, inquire into
changes in the library, home to a new
distance learning classroom, and try
out the athletic facilities. You will see
areas where we must improve, but you
will also take pride in the renovations
and new additions. With your help, we
will realize our facility and campus
dreams by 2005.
Best wishes,
Robert E. Shimp, President
