Kerrville Supporters Join
San Antonio Chapter Effort
Among the alumni attending an Alumni
Association chapter organizational meet-
ing in San Antonio September 12 were
two Kerrville couples who have the dis-
tinction of being McMurry supporters for
more than 40 years.
Mrs. Leo Tucker (Lela Mae Skinner)
graduated with the first degree class in
1926. She transferred to McMurry after
one year at a junior college. Tucker was
a member of the first graduating class
to have completed four years at Mc-
Murry, graduating in 1927.
Joe McKinley Found
Dead At Corpus
Joe McKinley, 27, a 1961 graduate of
McMurry, was found dead in a Corpus
Christi motel room on July 19. He had
gone to the motel to spend the night,
giving up his room at home to visiting
relatives. Death was apparently due to
a heart attack. He was the son of Mr.
and Mrs. E. F. McKinley of Corpus
Christi. A brother, the Rev. Bill McKinley
of Eden (also a McMurry graduate), had
been visiting in Corpus Christi during the
time Joe died.
Both Tuckers were journalistically
minded during their college years. Mrs.
Tucker edited the War Whoop, the col-
lege newspaper, and Tucker was the
first editor of the Totem, the yearbook.
In addition, Mrs. Tucker was the first
graduate of the college to teach at Mc-
Murry. She returned to be an instructor
in women's physical education.
Rev. and Mrs. George C. Hardy also
attended the San Antonio area meeting
after having impressively demonstrated
their interest in McMurry last July when
they established a $10,000 scholarship in
memory of Chaplain Hardy's father, the
Rev. W. F. Hardy.
Chaplain Hardy graduated with a BA
degree from McMurry in 1928 and holds
the BD degree from Southern Methodist
University in Dallas. He has served pas-
torates in the Northwest Texas and Texas
Conferences and is a retired lieutenant
colonel in the U.S. Army Reserve. He has
been chaplain of the Veterans Adminis-
tration Hospital in Kerrville for 21 years.
Mrs. Hardy is a professor of English in
Schreiner Institute at Kerrville and is in
the process of writing a series of four
high school English textbooks.
