DR. GORDON BENNETT
Gordon Bennett Fills
McMurry Presidency
Dr. Gordon R. Bennett, execu-
tive vice - president for the last
eight years, has been named pres-
ident of McMurry College.
He is the sixth elected president
in the 35-year history of the
Methodist College, and the first
layman ever named to the posi-
tion.
Dr. Bennett was named presi-
dent here Thursday following a
called meeting of the Board of
Trustees. He succeeds the late
Dr. Harold G. Cooke, who died
last March 17. Dr. Bennett had
been acting president in the in-
terim of a search for a successor.
The announcement of Dr. Ben-
nett's election was made by Dr.
J. M. Willson, board chairman
from Floydada. Willson prev-
iously had announced that the
trustee panel would hold a called
session in Abilene August 21, and
probably would name a new
president.
The first president of McMurry
College was the late Dr. James
W. Hunt, who founded the institu-
tion. He served in the position
from 1921-34.
Dr. O. P. Clark, now a retired
Methodist minister in Abilene,
acted as president for approxi-
mately three months following
the death of Dr. Hunt.
Dr. C. Q. Smith, now chancellor
of Oklahoma City University,
became the second elected presi-
dent of McMurry. Dr. Smith
held the post from June, 1934, to
December, 1935. Dr. Thomas W.
Brabham, now a member of the

Stresses Homecoming
September 22, 1958
Dear Indian Friends,
The 1958 version of McMurry's
Homecoming is beginning to fall
into a very identifiable charac-
ter — ENTHUSIASTIC REMIN-
ISCENCE!
Those of you who return to
the campus expecting to find
someone "you know" will be
easily accommodated. Those of
you who want to run into some-
one who "knows you" will be
guided to the place where you
will be easiest found by friends.
You Homecomers with children
will find that the first concern of
the Exes Association is for that
first item on the agenda for 1958.
Baby sitting services will be
provided during the coronation
ceremonies on Friday night, Oc-
tober 10th, using the Aldersgate
Church facilities. On Saturday,
please note that BABYSITTING
SERVICES BEGIN — 8 a. m.
Three age groups will be cared
for: (1) babies who enjoy sleep-
ing, (2) babies who enjoy play-
ing and sleeping, and (3) babies
who hate to sleep, but who love
TV and movie cartoons. Did we
reach yours? We can adjust,
Bring them on!
The Abilene Exes Association
will be your hosts and hostesses.
They are arranging for a social on
Friday night, October 10th, after
the coronation ceremonies, and
they will offer a guide service
during the Saturday (11th) af-
fairs. /
If you will just set aside Sat-
urday, October 11, 1958, to attend
the Homecoming and the A. C C.-
McMurry football game— it will
certainly add to the already happy
outlook for 1958—THE HOME-
COMING OF ENTHUSIASTIC
REMINISCENCE!
BRAD ROWLAND,
President,
McMurry Ex-Student Association.
Southwest Texas Methodist Con-
ference in San Antonio, succeeded
Dr. Smith. Dr. Brabham held the
reins from November 16, 1935, to
October 10, 1938.
Dr. Frank L. Turner, an evan-
gelist in Fort Worth, was named
president of McMurry in 1938.
He served until 1942, when the
late Dr. Cooke was appointed to
the post.
Dr. Bennett, a native of Stam-
ford, joined the McMurry College
administration in 1948 as an as-
sistant to Dr. Cooke. In 1950,
he was promoted to executive
vice-president.
A former public school official,

Do what Reservation and other
elder tribemembers do and cele-
brate homecoming season here at
McMurry.
The 1958 homecoming season is
slated for October 10 and 11, with
the Indians facing the Abilene
Christian College Wildcats in the
Saturday night ball game at Fair
Park Stadium.
This will be the 32nd annual
homecoming for McMurry, since
its founding in 1923 by Dr. James
W. Hunt.
Friday morning the teepee vil-
lage will be erected by various
campus organizations, each try-
ing to build the most authentic
teepee for the judging to be con-
ducted Oct. 11.
The Reservation Princess and
Chief McMurry will be crowned
during the Friday evening cere-
monies by the new college presi-
dent. The class favorites and run-
ners up also will be presented.
The spirit of the campus will be
at a high pitch during that week,
for not only is it homecoming, but
also the opponent for the football
game is Abilene Abilene Chris-
tian. (Continued on Page 4)
I
HOME AGAIN—Members of the Pre-professional club put up their
teepee for the 1956 homecoming. The sight brings back memories
that this is McMurry, McMurry with her annual homecoming, with
her Reservation spirit, with her Christian ideals. This is McMurry—
our home.
