8 New Professors Join McMurry Faculty
SHERWOOD SUTER
Asst. Professor of Art
McMurry College will add eight
new faculty members this fall,
and welcome another professor
back from a doctoral leave of
absence.
New staff members will be em-
ployed in biology, English, art,
physical education, religion,
speech, journalism and publicity,
and library administration.
Returning after a three - year
leave of absence to obtain the
PhD degree in zoology at the Uni-
versity of Texas will be Dr. John
Hilliard, chairman of the biology
department. Dr. Hilliard came to
McMurry in 1951.
Also to be added to the Mc-
Murry biology department as an
assistant professor will be Wil-
liam N. Bradshaw, who holds the
B. A. degree in biology from Aus-
tin College (1951), and the MA de-
gree from the University of Tex-
as (1956).
Dr. Selma Bishop, who has
taught English at Abilene High
School for the past 28 years has

appointed associate professor of
English at McMurry. Dr. Bishop
received her BA and MA degrees
from the University of Texas, and
the PhD degree from the Univer-
sity of Colorado (1956).
Sherwood E. Suter, 28, art su-
pervisor and teacher in the Mich-
igan public schools for the past
four years, has been named as-
sistant professor of art at Mc-

Murry, Troy was artist for the
Totem. (He has come a long way
since then).
Speaking of the Totem, we'd
like to mention that the 1957 edi-
tion was dedicated last spring to
Dr. W. B. McDaniel, administra-
tive vice-president of McMurry.
A great friend and loyal sup-
porter of McMurry College, J. H.
(Herman) Rucker of Abilene, died
this summer. Mr. Rucker, 67, was
the father of five sons and four
daughters who graduated from
McMurry, including Melba Ruck-
er, '55, secretary of the Alumni
Association for 1957-58.
J. Bartell LaRue, one of the
most talented actors ever seen on
the Radford stage (Willie Loman
in "Death of a Salesman") and his
wife both received BFA degrees
from the Boston University of
Fine and Applied Arts last June.
The LaRues have one daughter,
Alecia, age 22 months.
McMurry exes admitted on trial
in the Northwest Texas Methodist
Conference last May 20 included
Harry C. Adair, Hamlin, Eugene
Bonney, Pampa, John L. Davis,
Big Spring; Hardy Cole, Childress;
Ke'nneth Rodgers, Plain view; H.
Deon Martin, Clesby Patterson,
George Weldon Thomas, William
Henry Watson, all of Abilene;
William Davis, Henry Salley and
Guy McLean, all of Stamford.
Alvin R. Mauldin, Jr., of Mert-
zon, McMurry graduate, was nam-
ed salutatorian in recent gradua-
tion exercises of the Texas Chi-
ropractic College, San Antonio.
Alvin was Married Feb. 1 to Mary
Wuemling of Arden.
Summer weddings included
Jack Allan Richards, and Barbara
Ann Brown, in Abilene; Emma
Appling Pannell and Ted Harris,
in Stamford; Jackie Hogan of
Merkel and Bill Alexander of
Wellington (he will coach at Lo-
renzo); Joan Harris and Dane
Clark, both of Lockney; Jan Free,
'56, and Eugene Williamson of
Lubbock (both teaching in Lub-
bock schools).
Also, Becky Willingham and
Tommy G. Seale, both of Abilene;
Barbara Jo Ketadall and Bob Wat-
son, at Abilene; Faith Simpson of
Hamlin and C. R. Absher of Mart;
Scollie Jefferies of Victoria and
Thelda Gaye Crow of Baird; and
Sylvia South of Abilene and Cur-
tis Johnson of Stamford, both '57
grads.

Grant Teaff, a 1956 graduate of
McMurry (MEd '57), returns this
fall as track coach, assistant foot-
ball coach, and assistant profes-
sor of physical education. The
23-year-old Teaff has been as-
sistant coach at Tom S. Lubbock
High School for the past year.
He replaces Elmo Cummins, who
resigned.
Dr. John H. Hicks, formerly
professor of Old Testament at
Southern Methodist University,
will join McMurry's religion de-
department as professor of Bible.
Dr. Hicks holds the AB degree
from Southwestern University,
the BD degree from Vanderbilt,
and the PhD degree from the
University of Chicago.
Goldia Cooksey of Norman,
Okla., will become assistant li-
brarian at McMurry in Septem-
ber. Miss Cooksey comes from
the Radford School for Girls, El
Paso, which she has served as
librarian since 1955.
