Drs. Gross, Cannon
To Deliver Willson
Lectures March 5-8
Dr. John O. Gross and Dr. Wil-
liam R. Cannon will deliver the
12th annual Willson Lectures at
McMurry College March 5-8, it
has been announced by Dr. Harold
G. Cooke, McMurry president.
Dr. Gross is executive secretary
of the division of educational in-
stitutions of the Board of Educa-
tion of the Methodist Church, with
headquarters at Nashville, Tenn.
Dr. Cannon is professor of
church history and dean of the
Candler School of Theology at
Emory University.
Dr. Cooke said the McMurry ad-
ministration is making plans to
host the largest gathering of vis-
itors from the Northwest Texas
and New Mexico conferences ever
to attend the Willson Lectures.
"We know that friends of Mc-
Murry from all over this vast area
will want to pay a return visit to
the campus at this time to see the
progress that is being made at
their Methodist college in Abilene,
as well as to hear these two out-
standing men of Methodism speak
on Christian life service," Dr.
Cooke said.
Major events scheduled for the
McMurry campus during Willson
Lectures week will be the annual
spring meeting of the McMurry
board of trustees, formal opening
ceremonies for the college's new
classroom building, and the an-
nual dinner meeting of the
Friends of the McMurry Library.
Dr. Gross made a visit to the
McMurry campus last spring, as
featured speaker for the annual
Founder's Day assembly April 5.
He also turned the first spade
of dirt in groundbreaking cere-
monies for McMurry's new dormi-
tory, now nearing completion.
Dr. Cannon was scheduled to
speak at the Willson Lectures last
year but was forced to cancel his
appearance because of illness.
Tribe Still Winless
The McMurry College Indian
basketeers were still seeking their
first win of the season as the
Chieftain went to press January

eight losses.
Since the last issue of this
smoke signal, the Tribe has been
trounced by TCU 97-52, South-
west Texas State 88-56 and 97-59,
Howard Payne 87-71, and has
been edged by ACC 63-60 and
by Texas Wesleyan 76-68.
Remaining games this month pit
the Redskins against ENMU Jan.

Jan. 15 in Abilene, Wayland Jan.

Scots Jan. 26 at Abilene, and Mid-
western Jan. 31 in Wichita Falls.

REMEMBER WHEN the McMurry College basketball team of 1955 won the Texas Conference cham-
pionship for the first time in 21 years. Although McMurry managed to tie for the title in 1952, they
hadn't won an outright pennant since 1934. Members of the '55 squad were (from left) Coach Edgar
Payne, Bobby Harris, Carl Anderson, Don Taylor, Jim Jowell, Bill Easterling, David McClure, Tommy
Boyd, Boyd Sylestine, Fred Shelton and Jerry English. Anderson and Boyd are the only members of
this team still wearing maroon and white, but Shelton's little (6-2) brother Bud is one of the Tribe's
top performers this season.
