Class of '31 Holds
Silver Anniversary
This story was not published in
the September Chieftain because
of lack of space. Our apologies to
the Class of '31.
The McMurry graduating class
of 1931 held a Silver Anniversary
Dinner in Iris Graham Memorial
Dining Hall on May 27, preced-
ing the Baccalaureate Sermon.
Swedish Bishop
Is Honorary Ex
McMurry's first honorary ex
from a foreign country is a Swe-
dish bishop.
Bishop Odd Arthur Hagen of
Stockholm, Sweden, was awarded
the honorary doctor of laws de-
gree from McMurry College Sept.
12 at the Ninth World Methodist
Conference at Lake Junaluska,
N. C. The degree was conferred
on Bishop Hagen by Dr. Harold
G. Cooke, McMurry president.
Bishop Hagen holds the MA de-
gree, bachelor of theology, and
the L i c e n tiate in Philosophy
(equivalent of the PhD). He holds
two other honorary degrees, the
DD from De Pauw University and
the doctor of laws degree from
the College of Pugent Sound.
Rigdon Edwards of Sweetwater,
class president, presided. Letters
and telegrams were read from the
following class members: Lance
Webb, Columbus, Ohio; Joe
Young, Seminole; Jewel Grimes
Spencer, Dallas; and Claude Le-
Mond.
Phone calls were reported on
from Asalie Key Price, Lamesa;
and Carey Pearce, Dallas. During
the dinner phone calls were also
received from Willard Brown
Washington, D.C.; and J. Edmund
Kirby, Big Spring.
The class presented Miss Jenny
Tate, sponsor, with an imported
bag, containing a jeweled "pill
box."
Miss Tate presented each mem-
ber of the class with a desk pen-
cil holder made from a limb of
the '31 Class Tree. This tree was
blown down during a storm about
ten years after it was planted.
Miss Tate saved some limbs plan-
ning the momentos for the class
members.
The 1931 graduates voted to
give the college a flower container
with accessories as their Silver
Anniversary gift.
Those present were Emma and
Rigdon Edwards with their
daughter, Sandra; Irene and Ray
Johnson; John Townsend; Miss
Julia Luker; and Miss Tate.
Enrollment For 1956
Sets Record of 914
Enrollment for the fall semes-
ter at McMurry College set a new
record with a total of 914 stu-
dents registered, according to Jer-
ome Vannoy, registrar.
Vannoy said this figure includ-
ed 677 regular students, with 237
students registered for evening
classes, including McMurry's Gen-
eral Insurance Institute and the
Oil Institute.
Enrollment of graduate stu-
dents totals 46.
An official breakdown on en-
rollment of the regular students'
classes, released by the McMurry
registrar, listed 269 freshmen, 155
sophomores, 107 juniors, and 100
seniors.
The enrollment figure reported
by Vannoy surpasses the college's
previous record enrollment of 786
students set last fall.

Blvd. Mrs. Parker is the former
Mary Jane Simpson, '38 graduate.
Mrs. Penfield, who lives at 325
Yale Road, Menlo Park, Calif.,
was back in Texas with her hus-
band to attend the annual meet-
ing of the National Bar Associa-
tion in Dallas. Her husband is a
lawyer, whom she met in Wash-
ington, D.C. after graduating from
McMurry and teaching for a spell
in the English Department.
Patricia R. Husband was recent-
ly commissioned a Second Lieu-
tenant in the WAC at Fort Mc-
Clellan, Alabama. Pat received
her BA degree at McMurry in
1953.
John H. Riley, McMurry ex, re-
signed as head coach at Moran
High School to accept a position
at Skidmore. W. T. Stapler, '55,
all-conference tackle in 1954, is
back from the service and has
been appointed assistant football
coach and head track coach at
Winters High School.
Mary Williams Helton, class of
1940, is a licensed woman engi-
neer with the Texas Highway
Department. She is associate de-
signing engineer with District 18,
Dallas. Her address is 5922 Good-
Ruth Joss, Littlefield first grade
teacher, writes that she was sorry
to miss Homecoming and "would
like very much to see all my old
boys and girls again."
Don and Mary Wineinger and
their daughters, Bonnie and Jean,
live in Delhi, La. where he is a
Methodist minister.
Bill M. Stinson, '50, is pastoring
in Mt. Vernon. He and his wife,
the former Patsy Hill. '48-'50,
have two children, Billy, 3, and
Marsha, 1.
Jack Hampton, '53, is minister
of education of the First Meth-
odist Church, South Bend, Ind.
He asked about the outcome of
the McM-ACC game. ACC won
this year, Jack, 26-23.
Mrs. Leland Law (Lucile Nel-
son, '50) lives in Wichita, Kan.
She and her husband, an aircraft
engineer, have a son, Steven,
age 1.
