Piney Creek Philosopher Comes
To The Defense of TV, Claims
It Prepares Kids To Face Life
Editor's note; The Piney
Creek Philosopher on his
Johnson grass farm on Piney
takes a look at kids and
television this week.
Dear editor
According to an article I read
yesterday in a newspaper
dropped by an encyclopedia
salesman while trying to beat
my dog to his car, a recent
survey has shown thai 44 per
cent of a group of youngsters
aged 4 to 6 prefer watching TV
to having their fathers around.
By the way, the salesman won.
Now in a survey like this
you've got to use your
analytical powers to get at the
true results, and sometimes the
survey will tell more than it
intended.
Take the percentage of 44.
What that means is that the
other 56 per cent who claimed
they preferred their fathers to
TV may have been aware that
Christmas is coming up and
they know where toys come
from.
So the percentage of kids
preferring TV to fathers may
be considerably higher.
On the other hand, the
survey failed to consult the
fathers. How many fathers
prefer having their kids glued
to TV than hanging on to them?
Television of late has come
into a lot of criticism, the critics
saying it's keeping children
from learning and liking to
read, and this criticism is
tihderstandable, coming from
editors and writers. Have you
ever seen a car manufacturer
opposed to driver education?
I don't know whether
television is hurting kids or not.
1 notice you can't get some kids"
head out of books and you can't
get some into them, which was
the situation before television
was invented.
However, anybody who has
ever seen parents give a sigh of
relief when the cartoons come
on and they know they're going
to have a solid two hours of
peace and quiet in the house,
knows there's a lot to be said
for TV.
Furthermore, watching TV
prepares kids for life. When
they see a car go off a cliff on
the screen or hear that some
cereal will make them strong,
they know it's pretend. It
trains them to know later on
that when some politician says
he's going to reduce taxes, he's
just going on.
By the way, if television is so
bad for kids, how do you
account for the shape adults are
in - adults who grew up before
TV came along?
Yours faithfully,
J. A. _

Vaccinate calves
for Brucellosis
With the continued increase
in brucellosis (Bang's disease)
in Texas and several other
states, cattlemen are advised to
vaccinate all heifer calves with
the official strain 19 brucella
abortus vaccine.
Both dairy and beef heifers
should be vaccinated between
the ages of two and six months,
preferably as soon after two
months as possible, points out
Ronald Lindsey, Bastrop
county agent for the Texas
Agricultural Extension Ser
vice.
He cites three advantages of
early vaccination: (1) the
animals are protected against
the disease at an earlier age; (2)
they are much less apt to show
residual titers when tested
later; and (31 under present
regulations "officially vaccinat
ed" heifers can move without
requiring the Bang's test until
they reach 24 months for beef
and 20 months for dairy breeds.
Heifers more than six months
old that are not "official
vaccinates" must be tested
prior to movement or sale for
breeding purposes, emphasizes
Lindsey.
The strain 19 brucella
abortus vaccine should be
administered by a veterinarian
or a state or federal animal
health official. Vaccinated
animals are permanently
identified with a tattoo or
brand and are reported to the
Texas Animal Health Commis
sion (TAHC). Copies of
vaccination records are provid-
ed to the owner and are also
maintained by the TAHC for
proof of "official vaccination."
Bull calves or adult animals
of either sex should not be
vaccinated, notes Lindsey.
Males may react by becoming
sterile, and older females may
suffer residual reactions which
are difficult to differentiate
from the disease when a blood
test is taken.
Lindsey reminds producers
to castrate all bull calves to
facilitate marketing and to buy
only "officially vaccinated"
replacement heifers from
known brucellosis • free herds.
