Galls On Plants
Can Clause
Damage
What about nails on ornamental
plants and sharft trees? Fortunate-
ly, says County Agent Ed Mtgura.
these small and usually spherical
abnormal growths arc not often a
serious problem. Most healthy
plants can tolerate a large number
of jjalls with no apparent injury.
But there arc exceptions, says
Migura. Under certain conditions,
gall insects can build up to damag-
ing numbers. Unhealthy trees and
plants are more likely to be dam-
aged by galls than are vigorous
growing and healthy ones.
Many kinds of insects and mites
can cause galls. Attack of each
species result in a distinctive de-
formity of leaves, twigs or stents,
explains the county agent. Some of
the more important gall makers
are mites, plant lice or aphids,
liny flies called midges and liny
wasps.
If control becomes necessary, il
I-or (hat Mhuwnr or w«tWliim Rlli

pImHI*- w. ;r>i.
, is important to remember that
control by insecticide is next to
1 impossible after the gall begins
to form. Kgg laying or hatching
by the pest stimulates the plant
to form the abnormal growth or
.•.ah, which becomes a protective
cell for the developing young. In-
sect ides, therefore, cannot make
contact with the insect.
In many instances, the best lime
to apply insecticides is now known.
Some species of gall insects attack
early in the spring, while others
may attack througlu>ut most of
the growing season. Preventive
spray treatments early in the grow-
ing season may reduce gall infes-
i I at ions.
Details on gall control arc out-
lined in L-lit!) "Texas Guide for
Controlling Insects on Ornamental
Plants," copies are available from
the county agent's office.
