The breath-taking Bastrop Bears
—performing like a team of des-
tiny—have made their bluest ad-
vance ever on the stale tof>tball
trail and now run head-on into their
toughest road block, Sweeny, in
the Class AA semi-finals Friday
night.
Needing .ill IS minutes for Hie
third straight week, Bastrop struck
for a touchdown in the fading
moments to pull out a 11-11 triumph
over Hardin-Jefferson in Gonroe
last week. It took a pulsating drive
of lti plays, covering 8T> yards, to
-natch away tin decision from the
heavier Rebels.
Now comes Sweeny—everyone's
preseason favorite in the state
race— at Victoria this Friday at
S p. m.
And if playing against the Bull-
dogs, ranked No. 1 for some 11
weeks, isn't the roughest test a
football team can face, it still
ranks alongside rattle-snake niilk-
ing as a spirt to be entered into
only with extreme caution and due
consideration.
Says Larry Turner, the Bears'
stoical coach, "We'll have to prove
we're a great team to beat Sweeny.
They're faster than we are, big-
ger. quicker and deeper.
"As for their speed, they have
an end < Klmo Wright i who's ti-.") and
runs a 9.6 hundred, .,et they didn't
throw to him but once in last
week - game (a 21-1-1 win over
Randolph t.
"And their fullback (Larry
("handler) who's '203, or more like
230, runs just as fast."
Turner doesn't minimize Bas-
trop's chances, though. "Our kids
have kept fighting, they've come
from behind any number of times
and they haven't quit yet.
"They've talked Sweeny .ill year,
now they think they can win."
Sweeny will sport a 12-<) record
against Bastrop's 12-0-1, a mark
the Bulldogs compiled easily with
1211 points offensively and eight
shutouts defensively. It has lived
up to all the promise accorded it
when the Bulldogs, a powerhouse a
year ago. teamed up witn Sweeny's
1965 state championship Negro
team and fielded 29 lettermen for
'66.
In the Hardin-Jefferson squeaker,
Bastrop wrote school history by
leap-frogging past the quarter-
finals, a bracket the Bears reachod
before losing to Hallsville in 1%3.

Two Children

Service Flag
Presented To
North of Bastrop KaMr^ Mu8eiun
I A service flair was Given to I
Ten-month-old Thadius Williams
and his one year old sister. Delia,
both children of Mr. and Mrs. Hil-
liert Williams, died in a residen-
tial fire alxiut three miles north of
Bastrop on Wednesday night of
last week. Two other children in
the family escaped without injury.
The blaze completely destroyed the
Williams home.
According to Bastrop County-
Sheriff, J. L. Nutt. neither of the
parents was at home when the
blaze lunke out. The father who
works for a Van Line was on a
job in Colorado. The sheriff said
the children's mother had gone up
tile road to a small grocery store,
ami had apparently left the house
just minutes before the fire started.
One of the fatally burned children
was in a south bedroom and the
other in a bedroom on the north
suit of the house The two children
who got out ol the house, the oldest
six. were playing ui the living
room.
The Bastrop Fire Department
answered the alarm, out arrived
too la11 to sas't the house or the
ismi children. Sheriff Nutt said.

This chapter of the story will be
all the more memorable because
the Bears, beset by penalties, two
interceptions and terrifying Held
position, twice fought kick from
deficits of 8-0 and 11 S.
Pushing over the final tally re-
quired some of the season's best
play from quarterback Cilff Wil-
kins, tailback Donnie Aldridge.
fullback Etl Sunders and linemen
Reggie Tuck, Carl Simpson and
Jim Courtney, among the most
obvious. For, with a men' 8: t.">
remaining, the Bears were pushed
back by a punt to their own l'i—
a situation that looked as hopeless
as a Phyllis Diller hairdo.
A half-dozen dramatic moments
and downs made up the goalward
drive:
One—a third-down-and-one dive
by Sanders al Bastrop's 21; two—
a second-aiKi-10 sweep by Aldridge
which carried for IS yards; three—
a third-and-seven rollout, good for
seven by Wilkins at the Bear -16.
Later on. Wilkins romj>etl for one
big 15-yarder, reaching the 20.
An age later, Aldridge crashed
over left tackle from the one on
third down, leaving H-J with 2:0.1
for any comeback effort.
fn Hie early stages, some of Bas-
trop's best gains were wiped out
via tiO yards of penalties. After one
pass to Dickie Henderson, good lo
the H-J 23, was called back, the
Rebs twk over on a punt in Bas-
trop territory. Halftrack Rick John-
ston promptly broke free for 43
yards, stopped only by Sanders'
sprawling tackle, on the Bear four.
Here Bastrop's rugged defense held,
then later gave up the ball via
fumble at the 22.
A pass from Mervyn Greer to
Byron Ellison covered that dis-
tance in one play, pushing the Rebs
ahead 8-0 after Ellison's two-point
run.
Bastrop rushed right back, mount-
ing a touchdown march on the
ensuing kickoff. In the series svere
a 37-yard pass from Wilkins lo
Henderson, and finally a 26-yard
touchdown sweep by Aldridge that
saw Bastrop throw more blocks than
a herd of angry kills in a nursery.
Big ones clearing Aldridge came
from Tuck, Rex Mayfiold, Hender-
son and Sanders.
Aldridge ran for the tying two
points.
Both clubs penetrated the 20 in
the second quarter, the Bears af-
ter Sanders returned an intercep-
tion Xi yards, just before halftone.
H-J kniK'kixl at Bastrop's goal
twice in the third period, cashing
in al last on a 25-yard field goal
by Johnson for an 11-8 lead. It
slixmd like this until those heart-
tugging final eight minutes of play.
Leading Bastrop's rushing game
—gmxf for 210 yards all told —
was Aldridge with 152 yards. Wil-
kins followed with lt>.
