SOCIETY
ASSKMBLY PROGRAM OF
INTEREST TO ALL
An assembly program was held
in "the High School gvm. January
2,'i. This was the first assembly
program held in the 1950 school
year. The Mental Marvel opened
his show by memorizing half a
deck of cards. Then he substrat t-
ed the numbers without looking
on the board. After they were
subtracted he called them out in
columns of f. and added them. He
memorized everything. Later he
handed out the Sear's catalogue,
largest catalogue printed, and
told any one what was on the
page they asked for. Everyone
wa surprised by the unusual feats
of memory. Many said they would
like to have a mind like that.
We found William Wallace very
interesting.

The following poem was written
by Mr.-. John McN'ulta in memor-
iurn of her brother, Elmer Null,
who died recently:
IT JUST HAD TO BE
Dear God, give me strength to
bear my pain,
The pain that lies within my heart;
Help nte to live until we meet
again—
The one you took, and left u.
apart.
Oh dear God, we don't understand
Just why it had to be,
But until we meet on that Heaven-
ly land,
Dear God give my strength to me.
We miss him so very much;
The grief i.s so hard to bear.
But I know you had a reason, Lord,
For leaving a vacant chair.
Tho* I know we'll meet again
some day
Within that distant land,
There will l e no stopping along
the way,
Until we're on that heavenly
strand.
We miss your presence, your lov-
ing care,
The welcome smile upon your face;
There will always be a vacant
chair—
No < ne else can take your place.
So dear one, a-, the rain i.-> slowly
falling,
I know it beats upon your grave.
Hut as the Master does His calling,
We must all try to be brave.
So dear (lad, take good care of
Elmer,
He was never very strong you i-.ee;
Keep hint in faith and bless him
each day.
Tho' I don't understand, I guess
it had to be.
V>u always did good deeds,
Your thoughts were for another;
Yoi ilway- helped a friend in
need,
And I'm not ashamed to say to
the world
That man was my brother.

Give Us Back
Our Sidewalks, Slim!
A small Classified Ad will find
A Buver.
I wrote that over an article in the
Clarion last week, but I didn't like
doinit it. After all, the man it was
aimed at—Slim Henderson —Is a
i ood friend of mine.
Slim came into quite a windfall
last month, and bought the old
Clarke place. The deed gave him
title to all the land—right down to
the street. Then Slim started to
take up the sidewalk to make his
lawn look better,
I felt it wasn't fair to the town
and said so in my article. Next
morning Slim comes around and
wants to know what I mean—get-
ting folks riled against him. I felt
ornery myself, and we had quite a
set-to over the whole business.
From where I sit, that was fool-
ish. Once we'd cooled off (over
lunch and a bottle of beer at Andy's
Tavern),Slim decided the sidewalks
should stay—for the common good
and I promised next time I'd take
a good look at the other fellow's
point of view before writing any
articles about him!
