Thrilling Advcumro.

A merchant, who wishing Id celebrate his
daujjhter'o wedding, collected a parly of her
young companions. They were circled
around her, wishing much happiness to the
youthful brido and her chosen one. Her
father gaccd proudly on hi.s lovely child,
and hoped that as bright prospects for the
rest of his children who were playing among
the guests. Passing through the hiill of the
basement lie met a servant who was carry
ing A lighted caudlc iti her hand, without
the candlestick. He blamed her for such
conduct, and went into the kitchen to see
about the supper. The girl soon returned
but without the caudlc. The merchant im-
mediately recollected that several barrels of
gunpowder had been placed in tho cellar
during the day, and that one had been open-
ed.
"Where is vour candle ?" lie inquired in
the utmost alarm.
"I couldn't bring it up with me, for my
arms are full of wood," said the girl.
"Where did you put it V'
"Well, I'd no candelstick, sol stuck it in
some black gaud that is, in thej"small bar-
rel.
Her master dashed downstairs, tho pas-
sage was long and dark; his knees threaten-
ed to give away under him; his breath was
choked; his flesh seemed dry and parched as
if he had already felt the suffocating blast
of death. At the end of the celler, under
the very room where his children and their
friends revel in felicity lie saw the open bar
tel of powder, full at tho top; the candle
stuck loosely iu the grains, with a long red
snuff of burnt wick; this sight seemed to
wither all his powers. Tho laughter of the
company struck upon his ear like tho knell
deatu. Ho stood a moment unable to move.
The music commenced above tho feet of the
dancers responded with vivacity; tho floor
shook, aud the loose bottles ill the cellar jin-
gled with the motion. Ho fancied the can-
dle moved, was falling; with desperate ener-
gy he sprang forward. lint how to remove
it 1 tho slightest touch would cause the red
hot wick to fall into the powder. With un-
equalled presence of mind lie placed a hand
ou each side4 of the candle pointed towards
theobjec, of his care, which as his hands
met, was secured iu tho clasping of his fin-
gers and safely moved away from its dan-
gerous position. When he readied the head
of tho stairs ho smiled at his previous alarm,
but tho reaction was too powerful, and he
fell into fits of the most violent laughter.—
He was conveyed to his bed senseless, and
many weeks elapsed ere his nerves recover-
ed sufficient tono to allow liim to resume
business.
What the Oiuls say ok the Young Mr*.—
We guess it would take the starch out of
some of the nice young men who congregate
at tho watering places—those who flutter
around the girls most—if they could hear
the remarks the ladies make about tlieni
when their backs are turned. A writer from
one of ourmifcl fashionable resorts narrates
the following : "Why don't you dance V"
asked a lady of an apathetic friend, a few
evenings since, on the piazza, when the mu-
sic struck up. "Oh, wo have 110 men dan-
cers here," was tho reply, "only a lot of lit-
tle shanghais, that tease a body to death."
Again when the music struck up a quadrille
alady on the piazza asked another, sitting
near the door, "Who are all in there,
Miss V" "Noboby but those everlasting
shanghais," was the response. One of the
said birds, who sports Parisian legs, a (Jape
Hay hat and a Saratoga coal, and is all
whiskers, teeth, bows and flattery, was np-
aftfouching agroap of ladles with .1 languid
-t— I'umjiiked, Kotlo voce, "Here
comes our monkey inciiii I ur uuoilnn' in
dividual—who wears a crop of glossy black
liair that hardly agrees with his age—the
vntiiark was made, "Here comes our wig

of grata at this market yuaWrduy atuouuled
to ov?r GO,OUl) bushels, about 50,000 bushels
of which was wheat. Wo understand that
a^th e roads are now taxed to their utmost
capacities in bringing fnward the produce
from the interior. These immense receipts
have had the effect to depress the market
somewhat, though the very liberal juice off 1
0:1 was paid for straight lots of club wheat
yesterday, and $1,12 to $1 lti for white win-
ter. We learn that vessels to arrive have
been chartered for wheat to Buffalo at
fourteeu cents.
Tho amount of stuffs to go foward for the
next sixty days will be 1,500,000 bushels
per week at a low estimate, employiugthe
clearance of ouo hundred and twenty per
week. If we allow twenty days to each ves-
sel for a trip, tho number to be employed
would amount to three hundred and thirty
vossels. We are uuder the impression that
this'is as many grain carrying vessels as
thore are that visit the upper lakes, aud
probably more.—Milwauku American.

Mine Frients—Vvu virst you coined hero
from Sharmany, you were boor and dirty,
as you had a right to be, and as your fad-
ders were boforo you ; you were porn so.
It was 110 disgrace in Sharmany, for there
the landiorts had a right to dake all you
could earn. But in dis country you
are do landlorts ; and when the hnglish
King gave you land, he bromised that 110-
pody should take away your monies but
your own selves. Now ho wants to cheat
you, aud takeaway your broperty like your
landlorts aforetime 111 Sharmany. And ho
has sent over his red goat so'diers to shoot
you, and to take away your houses and
pai ns, aud your wives and your sweethearts.
If you submit to it, they will kick you and
lespise you, aud so will the bretty gals ;
they will laugh at you, and say goot, you
leserve it all, pecanse you would not fight

having left Liberty at HJg, A. M.,tlio same
day. She brought some 40 bnlos of cotton

a gradual increase in her patronage every

shown that they duly appreciate the impor-

already raised a subscription to the amount
of $2,000 in cash, besides a considerable do-

Willie, as he was familliarly called, wits
one of the early judges of Texas. To liis
court a lawyer by the name of Charlton
started a point of law, and tho Court refti led
to admit the Counsel's statement as -ulli-
cient proof.
"your law, Sir," said the Judge; "give
us the book and page, Sit "
"This is my law,Sir," said Charlton,pul-
ling out a pistol; 'and this, Sir, is my book,'
drawing a bowie-knife; "and that is my
page," pointing the pistol toward the Court.
"Your law is not good, Sir," said tho un-
ruffled Judge; the proper authority is Colt
on Revolvers," as he brought a six-shooter
instantly to bear on the head of the Counsel,
who dodged the point of the argument, and
turned to the jury.
On another occasion the Judge concluded
the trial of a man for murder by sentencing
him to bo hung that very day. A petition
was immediately signed by the entire bar,
jury and people, praying that longer time
might be granted the poor prisioner. The
Judge replied to the petition by saying that
"the man had been found guilty, the jail
was very unsafe, and, besides, it was so very
uncomfortable ite did not think any man
ought to be required to stay in it any longer
than was necessary."
Shockimo A Ladv's Modesty.—A singu-
lar occurence happened during tho past
summer in one of the provinces oi France.—
An honest country gentlemen, possosed of a
very hadsonio park, had found the. weather
very oppressive, and was in the habit of tak-
ing n morning walk in his park, with a ci-
gar in his mouth and 110 clothes upon his
back. A lady of the neighborhood, from
whoso windows the park might be seen,
considered tho gentleman's proceedings as
entirely too primitive and cited linn before a
magistrate. The defendent contended that,
upon his own property, he had the right to
do what he pleased, and, morover, that tho
oung lady's house was a mile or more from
he spot where ho was in tho habit of
tralkiug, in nnhiralia naturalihus. "She
mustliavo good eyes to distinguish at that
distance whether 1 was dressed or not," said
the gentleman
Interrogated by the magistrate upon this
point, the lady whose modesty had been so
rudely shocked, naively replied—"Oh, but
I looked at him with the aid of an excellent
telescope!"
