HOUSTON ACADEMY.
THE Houston Academy will be open for the ad-
X mission of pupils of both sexes, on the. 1st oj De-
cember.
The chief object in this Institution will be to impart a
thorough English and practical Education.
Spelling.-Reading. Writing, Arithmetic. Geography,
Rngllsh Grammer. Composition will form an indispen-
sable part of the atudlesof aH th ^pupils at some period
of their scholastic course. Pains will be taken to teach
every pnpll to speak and write habitually, his own lan-
guage with correctness.
In addition to Authmetic, the other branches of Math-
ematics, pure and applied, will he taught to those ponils
who wish to acquire them as extensively and thoroughly
as in any of the American Colleges; embrodug the ae-
ries as set forth in the Text Books of Da vies, Loomis and
ether ritnllar authors. In surveying, Menseration,etc.,
the use of instruments will be taught practically.
With Geography will be taught the use of Globes, and
to facilitate the understanding of Astronomy, the
Trustees of the Academy have provided a planetarium
and other apparatus.
A small Chemical apparatus and some few Philosophical
instruments have been purchased. A more extensive pro-
vision of the means of Instruction lp these branches will
be made when the wants of the Academy shall appear to
demand it.
The Latin and Greek, the French and German lan-
uages wlil be taught to those pupils who may wish to
cquire them. There will be as thorongh and as exten-
ive instruction in these languages as at any institution
n America.
Provision is also made for teaching Music.
In moral or Ethical Philosophy, in the study of Histo-
ry and in the various reading of the Academy. Tbe
doctrines taught will be In consonance with the princi-
ples. the iustltu tions and usages of our own State, and
of the neighboring States of the Union.
It is not designed in this afeertisement to present a
complete programme ofthecourse o$nstructu>n in tbe
Academy, but to give some geuend idea of its scope and
and of the branches taugh .
For purposes of Instruction the puplUwill be cisssi-
•ed according to their studies.
I n reference to prices of tuition they will be arranged
in three classes, and charge! according to the branches
pursued, Three, Four, and Five dollars monthly, pay-
able In advauce. Thin mm covers all charges.
For the convenience of those parents who may wish to
eu<l their smaller with their larger children an elemen-
tary school is to be opened in a room of the Academy,
for which the tuition is at the rat* of two and a half dol-

AUSTIN COLLEGE,
At a regular adjourned meeting of the Board of Trus
tees, of Austin College, held in Houston,on the 15th
Insfe Rev. RuAts W. Bailey was elected President of
tbe College. Mr. Bailey being present and having bignl-
tled his acceptance of the office, it was
Resolved, To resume the exercises of tlie College now
temporarily suspended, on the 1st Monday of Feb. next
including the exercises of the Preparatory Department
with two Professors to aid the Presideut.
Resolved 2nd that Mr. Bailey, who has been long en-
raged in tlie busiucss of lust ruction, and former! v s
Professor in our College, has our entire confldeuce, and
tha friends of the College are earnestly Invited to give
their prompt, cooperation to restore the Institution to

INFORMATION,
1. The public are lespectfnily Informed that the ex-
ercises or Austin College wl.l be resumed on the first
Mon lav in February next, under an afficient and able
corps of teachers.
2. The regular College Classes will be organized, If
material be furnished, however small iu number, and
a full course oflnstructlon given to each, in the regular
studies for graduation.
3. Th« Preparatory Department will be organised un-
der the general superintendence of the President, and
auy boy who can read InteiUglbly may be admitted to
IU classes.
4 The President will occupy rooms In the Collage
building, where l.e maybe found at all tlmespaud all
the Professors who n+ay not hav® families of their own.
