Great Laud Speculations iu Iowa.
Very Valuable Lands to be
Located.
I WOULD very respectfully Inform tlie eitisens of
Houston and vicinity that I propose starting to
Iowa, on a trip to locate lauds, in the month of
Marc'i next. Having had considerable experience
in the land locating business, both in Texas and in
the N rtliwestern States, I feel prepared to lay thai
I can make choice selections of land for those who
will entrust their U. 9. Bounty Land Warrants to me
for location.
Iowa contains a very large amount of vacant
lauds subject to location, and which cannot be sur-
passed forfertility and beauty in tlie world. Water,
timber, coal, and iron ore of excellent quality, are
found all over the State in great abundance. I will
locate for the very low compensation of
ONE-FIFTH OF THE LAND ONLY, ANI> PAY
ALL EXPENSES;
will warrant good locatious. or no pay, and such
lands as will be worth in three yesri from $3 to .-20
per acre, owing to the very rapid advaucement of
public improvements. My brother residing in Iowa
and being engaged in the land business, and conse-
quently being well acquainted with the lands in the
entire State, will give me superior advantages in
making the very best locations that can be desired.
I will be in Houston about the Gth or .Ui of Maich.

Great Economy in Sugar flaking*
WE, the subscribers, baring witnessed the per*
formance and successful operation of 'Thomp-
son's Bagasse Burner or Furnace,f on the plantation
of Mr. Qossett Sc. Johnson, Parish of Jefferson —
Said Burners, or Furnace, are composed of a series
of burning chambers, which are applied to two Cyl-
inder Boilers, 30 feet long, 28 inch diameter, which
furnishes ample steam to run their engine with little
ovt-rhal the Bagasse, green from the mill, without the
aid of wood or the use of flowers, generating a much
greater heat than we have ever seen from Bagasse'
by any procees. the flues and underneath the boiler
being a continual white heat, consuming all smoke
and gasses as well as the Bagasse, leaving little or no
ashes or cinders, and we are of opinion that with
sufficient boiler surface to consume all the Bagasse,
sufficient steam can be generated not only to run the
engine but do much, if not ail the clarification and
evaporation of the cane juice; and we are further
of opinion that the principle of this furnace is cor-
rect and practicable, forming a natural combustion,
and being a combination of air-tight and draught,
und unlike the blower system, which is forced and
artificial:

German Bitters>
PREPARED BT
DR. C. M. JACKSON,
German medicine Store*
Jfo 130 Arch St., one door below Sizth, Philada
Their power over the above diseases is not ex-
celled, if equalled, by any other preparation in the
United States, as the cures attest, in many cases af-
ter skiflful physicians had failed.
These Bitters are worthy the attention of Invalids.
Possessing great virtues in the rectification of the
liver and lesser glands, exercising the most search-
ing power in weakness and affections of the diges-
tive organs, they are withal safe, certain and pleas-
ant.
TESTIMONY FROM TEXAS.
IS. F. Rucker, Washington, Texas, Sept.,
24th, 1853, says : "I have sold the last bottle of
Oerman Bitters to-day. It is quite a popular medi-
cine, and those who have used it speak in the high-
est terms of its salutary influence."
H W Fisher, Matagorda, Texas, July 15th,
1853. says : "The German Bitters have become ve-
ry popular here and are moving off rapidly."
T H McIVlalton 6c Co., Richmond, Texas,
Sept. S3. 1853, says : "We. a e pleased to inform you
that your German Bitters give universal satisfaction;
it is in great demand. Send as early as practica-
ble."
Geo. Young, Wheelock, Texas, April 17,1854
says : 4*Thc German Bitters have arrived in good
time for the summer sickness, and I think there will
be a good demand for them, as I find every person
who has used them pronounced it the best medicine
of the kind they have ever known."
These Bitters are entirely vegetable, thereby pos-
sessing great advantage over most of the prepara-
tions recommended for similar diseases.

THE present critical state of European affairs
will render these publications unusually inter-

This preparation has now borne the test of orer
fourteen years experience, since its first introduc-
tion to public favor, during which time numerous
imitations have sprung into existence founding
their claims to the confidence of the community in
the curative powers contained in Sarsaparilla Root,
the great reputation and extended use of which has
been mainly attributable to the many wonderful
cures effected by the use of this preparation. While
Sarsaparilla Root forms an important part of its
combination, it is, at the same time, compounded
with other vegetable remedies of great power, and
it is in the peculiar combination and scientific man*
ner of its preparation, that its remarkable success
in the cure of disease depends. Other preparations
imitate it in the style of putting up, and in bearing
the name of one of its ingredients, and here ends
their resemblance to it. Those needing a remedy
and purifier like this, ure requested to note where
this difference exists, and in making choice of what
they will use, not to take any other but that one en-
tktled to their confidence, from the long list of cures
it has effected on living witnesses , whose testimonials
and residences have been published, and who are
still bearing testimony to its worth.

Mkssrs. Sands.
Gentlemen—My little daughter was afflicted for
a long time with a Sore head and Byes, and by using
your Sarsapalilla, was perfectly cured, other med-
icines and Sarsaparillas having failed to relieve her.
Having used it and tested its efficacy. I now conf
dently recommend it in preferance to any other r *-
paration; and I find that purchasers after they we
used it, invariably want the same article gain,
whenever they require a medicine for which this jis
recommended.
Respectfutly yours, ' J FLINT, .M D.

Zinc Paints*
T HE NEW-JERSEY ZINC COMPANY are now
manufacturing these Paints, of superior qual i-
ty. Their advantages of other Paints are:
1st. They are not poisonous Sleeping apart-
ments, recently painted, may be occupied with im-
punity, and painters using these paints are not sub-
ject to the distressing maladies arising from the use
of lead
2d. Their beauty and durability. Zinc, on in-
side work, becomes much harder than any other
paints, and is not easily soiled ; is whiter than pure
white lead, and as it retains its whiteness and bril-
liancy unaffected by bilge water, coal, or sulphurous
gases, it is unrivalled as a paint for ships and steam-
boats. For outside use, exposed to weather or water,
Zinc Paints will retain their color and preserving
qualities long after other paints are destroyed.
3d. The White Zinc Paints will cover (equal
weights) about two thirds more surface than pure
laed—this, in connection with their greater durabil-
ity, makes in the long run the cost of painting with
Zinc less than half the cost of lead.
Brown and Brown Stone Color Zinc Paints, which
are sold at low prices, are well adapted for painting
roofs, out-buildings, and all metallic surfaces, par-
ticularly iron, which they effectually protect from
rusting, exposed to either heat or weather. These
Paints are prepared in the same manner, and may
be used in all respects like Whi te Lead. They are
for sale by many of theorincipal dealers in the cities
and large towns of the Union, and by the Company's
Agents, Majtjvikg ic Sqcikr,
45 Dey-street, N. Y.
N. B.—All Paints manufactured by this Company
are warauted pure.

Shinfling Machine*
'I HE SUBSCRIBER HAYING RECENTLY PUR-
X CHASED the right of this machine for the Uni-
ted States, now offers to make transfers of the right
to run said machine, or sell to those who may be
desirous to purchase the right for one or more of the
States.
This machine is now in successful operation in
ten or twelve iron works in and about the vicinity
of Pittsburgh, also at Phoenixville, and Reading,
Pa., Covington Iron Works, Md, Troy Rolling
Mills, and Troy Iron and Nail Factory, Troy, N. Y ,
where it has given universal satisfaction-
Its advantages over the ordinary Forge Hammer
are numerous : considerable saving in first cost;
saving in power; the entire saving of shingler'sor
hammerman's wages as no Uttendance whatever is
necessary. It being entirely self-acting; saving in
time from the quantity of work done, as one machine
is capable of working the iron from sixty pundling
furnaces; saving of waste, as nothing ->ut the scoria
is thrown off. and that most effectually; saving of
staffs, as none are used or required. The time re-
quired to furnish a bloom being only about six
seconds, the scoria has no time to set, consequently
is got rid of much easier than when allowed to con-
geal as under the hammer. The iron being discharg-
ed from the machine sohot, rolls better and is much
easier on the rollers and machinery. The bars
roil sounder, and are much better finished. The
subscriber feels confident that persons who will ex-
amine for themselves the machinery in operation,
will find it possesses more advantages than have
been enumerated. For further particulars address
the subscriber at Troy, N, Y.

It has been reserved to this distinguished author-

be regarded as the most brilliant success ever ob-
tained by an American writer of fiction. "RUTH
HALL/* her first continuous story, though deriving
no inetrest or popularity from connection with any of
those vexed questions which agitate the public mind,
has, in the two months since its first appearance,
reached a greatly larger sale than any other Ameri-
can work of fiction whatever within the tame period*
This extraordinary fact is, of itself, abuudant evi-
dence of the absorbing interest and graphic power of
this remarkable work. We have in ouf possession i
several hundred reviews of "RUTH HALL,** which j
have already appealed in the principal newspapers |
and periodicals. .Nearly all of these pronounce it I
emphatically a work of genius, many predicting for •
it the largest sale of any American book, and devot- I
ing whole columns to its eulogism, while we have
yet seen but a very few (not twelve in all) which de-
ny its singular fascination.
