All other compounds of syrups of the root have

found to contain noxious ingredients, which neu-

not so with Hurley's preparation.

Tlie Great Coush Remedy.
CHERRY EXPECTORANT.
npiIE following original letter was handed to us
JL for publication- A remedy which can elicit
such encomiums must be a good one.
Galveston, Texas, April 25, 1856.
Dr. O. O. Woodman, New Orleans:
My Dear Sir—:ln justice to you and a duty I owe
to a suffering, and, 1 may say, a world of cough-
ing people, I state what your invaluable Cough
Remedy—your Cherry Expectorant—has done for
me, when all other remedies had failed to give any
relief. In the fall of 1847, living in St. Louis,,
where I have resided most of the time for the la3t
sixteen years, I took a severe cold which settled
ou my lungs, and was confined to my bed aod
dosed and blistered by doctors for several weeks,
but finally got on my legs again, but not cured of
my hard coughing, and rattling and tickling in
my throat, which continued incessantly for more
than six months, always the worst in the winter.
My frieuds insisted 1 had coughed enough to kill
a dozen common men, and that I must be in the
last stages of consumption. I made up my mind
I must cough my life away. I left St. Louis in
Decemb. r last to travel and spend the winter in
the South. When I called at your store in Vicks-
burg. you will recollect I was coughing so hard I
could not talk to make my business known, Yoa
said you would cure my cough. As you gave in
a bottle of your Cherry Expectorant, I tho ught 1
would not slight yo*i and your medicine so much
as not to try it; and in thankfulness shall I ever
remember the day I did so. In but a few days it
begun to allay and diminish my cough and all
tickling in my throat; and beiore 1 had used more
than three-fourths of the contents of that bottle
I was entirely cured and for weeks I did not even
raise a eou;_b, though exposed day and night in aU
weathers, in traveling. However, in March, while
traveling in North Carolina, I took a severe cold,
and my coughing commenced again, and also the
tickling in my thtoat at intervals; and before my
arrival in New Orleans, on the 12th inst., on some
nights my coughing would commence and continue
for an hour or twtrr I soon procured-another bot-
tle from you, and in less than two days I was en-
tirely relieved again. I am now determined to al-
ways keep a bottle on hand, and in the commenc-
ing of 'i cough al"very few small doses will relievo
it entirely. I am now fully satisfied it is the best
Cough Remedy now kuown to the world; and it is
a duty you owe ici.the coughing and afflicted part
of tbe human family, to put so vaJuable a remedy
within the reach of all. Its praise will soon be
upon the tongues of tens of thousands of joyful
and cougliless happy souls.. -So-great a remedy as
your Expectorant should be .brought before the
public. "* ...

tion of my name, however humble it may be, ei-
ther in the world of letters or of medicine. Ob-
servation "and experience, however, "have forced
upon rnc the con viction, that Billings' Carminative
and Astringent Syrup is a very valuable-compound,
prepared upon scientific principles—perfectly in
harmony with the laws of organic life—and, there-
fore, deserves (although its ingredients are kept
secret) to rank higher in the sci.le of remedial
agents than a mere nostrum. It affords me pleas-
ure to be able (without the fear of successful con-
tradiction) to add my testimony in favor ot its ef-
ficiency, as a safe and pleasant remedy, in all the
for,ii.- of bowel complaints for which it is rccom-
meaded. 1 have used it myself in several verv in-
teresting chronic cases of ^iarrit.oea and dysentery,
and recommend it in many other?; and in cverv
instance, where such a preparation was indicated,
it proved successful. " -v... j, ,-""

ltoodiua 's Extract of Jamaica
Ciln^er.
SUCH is tl.e intimate connection between the
stomach and the nervous system, that the
health of one depends very much upon the state
of tbe other, and a medicine which is grateful and
beneficial to the stvtnach, has the effect of restor-
ing the nervous system to its natural tone and rig-
or: and owing to these circnmstances the Extract
of Ginger will be found nn excellent remedy for
nervous and sick headache, for sea sickness, nau-
sea, etc., etc. The great advantage of the fluid
extract, or essence of Jamaica Ginger, is, that in a
very concentrated form, it contains all the active
principles without any of the inert matter, which
makes it much more agreeable to the stomach.
Dyspeptic perso ne-who arc troubled with nan-
sea, or distress of the stomach, after eating, ow-
ing to the weakuess of the digestive organs, will
find this preparation invaluable, as it usually af-
fords immediate relief, and is far more efficacious
than brandy or any other kind of ardent spirits, as '
it stimulates and warms the stomach, producing a
more permanent relief, without the injurious con?
sequences which result from alcoholic stimulants.
During the prevalence of the cholera, it was
found of the greatest benefit for preventing a
weakness and rclftjation of the bowels, whUu,
produce diarrhea.
A few drops in a tumbler of water, with sugar
or syrup, form a healthful and delightful beverage;
this extract, counteracting the bad effects of the
cold water.
WOODMAN'S EXTRACT OF JAMAICA GINGER
is elaborately prepared from carefully selected ar-
ticles of the best quality.

Extract of Jamaica Ginger," which is warranted
to be exactly what it is representod.

T HAVE FOI SI) IT. Having discovered
JL a process for DESTROYING THE GRAZING
or CUTTING ANT, and having secured the same
in the Patent Office, at Washington, I take great
pleasure in presenting it to the public. The pro-
cess consists of an Engine and Chemical Compound
by which a deadly gas is generated, and forced
into tbe recesses of tbe enemy. I warrant it to be
effectual—no humbug—and to be entirely free from
any deleterious influence upon the health of the
operator. The engine weighs about 50 lbs., is
easy of construction, is portable, and can be made
by a cabinet maker or carpenter anywhere. The
chemical compound can b« had atmy store in this
place in any quantity needed. For testimonials
see printed circulars. D. G. GREGORY, M. D.
