The number of tires which
have occured thro light the entire
South within the past two weeks
with especial reference to the
tire at Paris, should induce every
citizen of Jefferson to use the
utmost care with tire. Jefferson
at this time could very easily he
the victim of a disastrous tire
and if care Is not exercised we
stand a chance of experiencing
one. The NKVVS is informed
that the City Council is deliher
siting upon purchasing more tire
lighting equipment—we are glad
of this. Hut if the people of the
city will do their share toward
preventing tire, the need for
such equipment will not be so
crying. We stand for more
tire equipment, a cleaner town
and a more careful populace
Be careful with your tire.

Congressman John N. Til man
of Arkansas has introduced a
bill in the horse providing that
Confederate soldiers and widows
of Confederate soldiers be given

ing the remainder of their lives.
Many good reasons are set forth
in the preamble of the bill why it
should pass It sets forth the
fact that tIn* South lost slaves
value.! at OOP,000,000, besides
a vast amount of cotton.
' Mans inhumanity to man" is
enough to make the angels weep.
Today we have the spectacle of
the greater part of the civilized
world, clawing at each others
throats like bull decs; spending
countless millions oi dollars for
guns and amunition, and sadd
ling a debt upon their respective
countries that will take unto the
third or fourth generation to lift.
Millions of homes have been sad-
dened by this war and the best
and strongest blood of the na
tions has been spilled on the bat-
tle field, That is war. Yet, but
turn ones' eyes a little way, and
disease, famine and unhappiness
stalk the land unhindered be
cause of one little word—poverty.
It is a sad commentary upon
civilization that children should
suffer for their fathers' mis-
deeds. We spend our millions
upon petty things, if one would
contrast those things with the
really great ones. We throw
millions away upon battle-ships,
when thousands are suffering for
the necessaries of life. We
throw other other millions into
Federal Building*, while thou-
sands, yea hundreds of thousand
of human beings, have not a place
to lay their heads. We lose oth-
