There is absolutely no confi-

Thirty millions a year are
paid out in Pensions alone— half
the national expenses before the

questions of most interest to the
Government. Yet the whim of a

South Carolina's second Inde-
pendence Day, js now the 10th ol'
April, the time the order took
effect for removal of the troops
from her State House. Probably
the day was celebrated through-
out the State as no other event
ever was. If the order had been
exteiied to Louisiana the whole
country might well have joined in
and took a general hollyday, and
from year to year celebrate the
cessation of Federal military in-
terference in State affairs. But
surely flic liberation of Louisiana
must follow speedily. When the
President looks back upon his
action in the South Carolina case,
aiul learns how general is its ap-
proval, lie can hardly hesitate iu
completing t|u good work, at this
time.
Secretary Evarts' instructions
lo the Louisiana commissioners,
look mainly to the formation of a
single Legislature out of the two
now claiming legal existence.
Several senators have l.ttely
gone, perhaps through administra-
tion influence, from the Packard to
the Nic. boll's Legislature, and the

Secretary Sherman promises
the reniova' of some of the bad
lumber that obstructs the progress
of business in the Treasury. Sec-
retary Thompson, too, is helping
to disorganize the Republican
party by reforming the pavy
department. Let us hope that
these professions are sincere, and
that the resultu will bear some
proportion of the promises so
freely made.

Jasper. AH our rooms are hand-
somely bedecked with the richest,
sw^test boiiquetsimagiiiahte,sent
in by several of our good neigh-
bors.
Our yard is so densely shaded
by trees that wo raiso very
little blooming' shrubbery or
plants, and as yet we have given
them small space in ojjr vegetable
garden; hence, wo appreciate
most highly all floral donations
from our friends. Mrs. Cnrraway
is indebted this week to Mrs.
Hardin, Mrs. Stono, Mrs. Ford,
Miss Mollic White ami Misa Clara
Blake,
Mrs. Fofd has decidedly the
most beautiful display of yard
flowers to be seeu in Jasper. Miss
Clara Blake liqs t|io next prettiest
collection of rich aud rare blooms.
All the ladies mentioned aud a
great many others have tho finest
kind of plants in their yards and
boxes, but it would bg very pleas
ing to see a greater spirit of
rivalry in these muttprs. Let the
gay yards become a prominent
feature of beauty in Jasper.
This bright, beautiful world
would bo a sad, desolate abode
without the street ftowers to cheer
us, and impart gladness and peace
to all mankind.
To the thoughtless and thank-
less crew who never aspire to ideas
and sentiments above the actual
requirements of outward life; to
this grovleling class, the touching
daintiuess, the mod cut, simple
lovclipess, tho precious unobtru-
sive sweetness of the flowers
ministers no delight.
All pure, tender, humble hearts
are ut case jind at home with the
flowers, and they commune
together iu sweet accord. Our
tenderesf, prettiest thoughts are
better expressed by the use of
delicate flowers, than with our
unruly tongues,
Op to the gnv and festive
throngs, whero quick music fills
the air, and we find tho halls
bedecked with fllowers.
Go to the tombs and flowers
arc clambering tliere.
Go to the silent chamber of
death, where friends in grief are
gathering 'round tie bier, and all
the decorations seen arc the mod-
est silent flowers.
Go to the bridal chamber and
there an important place is given
to flowers.
Go into the captive's glooniv cell,
and what is found to cheer and
soothe him iu his long dark days
of loneliness but a few wreaths of
smiling flowers.
They speak all languages, to all
people, in all couutries, aud under
all circumstances.
We have a friend of refined
feelings and culivated taste, who
never.partakes of a meal without
flowers strewn about her plate.

before opeifly, anfl that tho elec
tiou avails nothing. We often
hear it talked that there is a con-
siderable amount of whiskoy con-
sumed ill Jagjier, ami if ttypro is
us much taken as before, there is
one result of prohibition which
is that far satisfactory to all
parties. The turbulent bum--
iners are now silent. They don't
row aroni)il and annoy quiet
pooplo as they did before. "They
don't get frautio nuU go yelling
through the streets that they are
wild and woolly, boru in the woods

annoyances at least are squelched,
by the prohibitionists. "

If people will tearthemselves away
from a good country to go to the
great West to be gulled and hum-
bugged, it's a sad pity—but the
way of every man is right in his
own eyes. If Jhty wjll act at
naught all oui counsel, aud go to
grass-hoppers and othor calami-

unwise choice, fii|d when distress,
anguish, destruction and desola-

them, we cau open our anus, call
them home and kill tlio fatted

There, now, coma home way-
ward ones,, we'll forgive you for
all we have said ; come home and

between us now. Your little

west to grow up with the country"
all count for nothing aud are iree
ly forgotten. Come home!

THE FEEBLE.
Debility, whether it b« inherent, or
caused by over taxed strength, or
protracted illness, has a most depress-
ing influence upon the mind, breed-
ing an abject melancholy nearly
akin to despair, and enforcing the
abandoment of cherished projects
and high hopes. Happily, the
enfeebled system, even in extreme
cas«s, is susceptible of invigoration.
It is prqved by incontrovertible evi-
dence that Hostetter's Stomach Bit-
ters is an unfailing strengthener of
the weak, and that in addition to
vitalizing the physical organization,
it establish^ regularity among those
organs upon whose efficient discharge
of the duties imposed on them l>Jf
nature, continued vigor and health
depend. Thousands of instances
might be cited to show the regenera-
ting influence of this health-giving
agent in cases of debility, liver
disease, dyspepsia, nervous ailments,
constipation, intermitteut fever,
urinary and nterme troubles, gout
and rheumatism, and other maladies
