Pope's translation of Humer, book
24, has the following:
"Since Ulysses' hnnrl
Hath slain the traitors, Hc.r.en shall
bless tie /an J;
None now tiie kindred or the unjust
shall own:
Forget the slaughtered brcther and
the son.
Each future day increase cf wealth
shall bring;
And o'er the past oblivion stri
wing.
Long shall Ulysses in his empire rest,
His people blessing, by his people
blest."
These lines are being inserted in
the Radical papers evetywhcre ove
he country. Whether it is omi-
nous of approaching evil we.

the opening wedge to bolder .inser-
tions. They maybe throwing o-it
feelers, to ascertain how the minds
of the people are drifting. The con-
stant effort of the pasty his been to
centralize the Pow^r of the govern-
ment and now that they have done
much in that dire< ton, they may aim
to fill the public Jounals with simi-
ments of Imperialism, and strive with
all the means within their reach to
shape public opinion and prepare
the American mind for a pro] onga-
tion of the present Administration.
They have the power unquestionably
and foreign pow< rs would sus* iin them
in such a measure. We believe our
people w ould destroy the leaders of
any party so violent as to foist upon
us an Imperial form of government,
but the move would be irresistably
powerful if it were attempted and the
opposition party would have no al-
ternative but to submit quietly as it
has been doing all along. They
surely do not mean to establish reign,
pf the grant family; and yet there is
considerable to alarm us, in the stress
they throw upon the seventh line of
the poetry above.

Oh I Wouln't we like to catch
him, wouldn't we give him a show,

him in the short ribs with a little

just try us, just give a'whack,

Last Friday evening we were atari

The steamship Austrian sailed
from Galveston on the 23 of Dei
cember, bound for Liverpoo', with
the most valuabl cargo ever clear-
ed from this first named port. A
part of the load was composed of
425U bales of cotton, 330 bags sea
island cotton, 1400 casos canned
beef and 60 packages pecans, the
total value of which is computed
at tho round sum of $425,000.
This is an event worthy of notice;
it is said to be by far the largest
shipment of sea island cotton ever
made, and the first time that
''preserved beef" was ever sent, in
.'argc quantities, to England di.
reet.

obsolete.

they have caused a great advance
in the price of board and lodging
at Austin.
I can't mourn for thee thou little bud
So early blasted by the frost of death,
Nor would recall(ifinvocation could)
Back to its mansion thy departed
breath,
& Snatched like a jewel from earth,s
gloomy mine
By the winged courier of heaven sent
down,
Tby sinless spirit has begun to shine
A radicut gem in thy Redeemer's
crown.
Dear friend, 'tis given me to know
A mother's anguish at such sad be-
hest,
I well can share the agonising throe
That rends the life-spring of thy
bleeding breast.

I feet there is so. exquisite a |<rief
That e'en from tenderest sympathy it
shrinks,
And the torn heart from "Gilead"
seeks relief,
Or 'neath the burden in despair must
shrink,
Despair's the shadow of approaching
wfrath, .
Its clou d ne'er lowers on the 1 ris-

Nor can its glooro invade thy path
Lighted as 'tis by hopes telest.,-! .. y.
