To Satisfy The Demand Hie Entire
Will Eventually Be So Baled.
For once the cotton planter has
an ally among the great corpora-
tions. For years the cotton tie
ring, the bagging combine and the
compress people have all lived off
the cotton grower. There was no
way to fight them and so they
grew rich on their enormous
profits, which the farmers had to
pay. Now the American Cotton
Company with its Roandlap bale is
in the field and it is so revolutioniz-
ing the cotton handling business
that many of the old expenses are
necessarily wiped out. The far-
mers get a large share oi this sav-
ing. but the old compress people
and the bagging and tie trust are
raising a great commotion against
the American Cotton Company as
though they had always been the
friends of the farmer. Unfortunate-
ly for them they never played the
friendly role before and now the
farmers doubt the sincerity of their
repentance.
The Roundlap bale is the trade
mark name tiven b> the American
Cot tot, Company to its round bale
to distinguish it from all other
bales The cotton mills of New
England and of Europe are eager
buyers ot this bale because as com-
pared with all other bales it has
many advantages covered by broad
patents, which greatly lessen the
cost of manufacture to the mill
This Roundlap bale eliminates two
or three processes in manufactur
ing and as the cotton mills of the
world pay more for this cotton than
any other, it naturally follows that
to secure the highest prices all
southern cotton must in time be
put up in this Roundlap form
Mr. Wm. C. I^overing, one of the
most distinguished cotton mill men
of New England says:
"I do not hesitate to say that
the time is coming when the cotion
manufacturers all over the world
will insist that their cotton shall
be delivered to them in the form of
a Roundlap bale."

Chilton and Bailey Again.
It was well understood that Joe
Bailey coald have been re-ekcied
the I>«oetalic- Ruder in the
~ practically without opposi-
tion if he had consented to accept
the honor. And yet there are men
who go about over the country and
ridicule Mr Bailey. Mr. Chilton
thinks that Mr. Bailey ought to be
driven out ot the Democratic parly
because his opinions do not alwavs
conform to those of the majority.
Mr. Chilton's opinions will always
conform provided Mr. Chilton can
ascertain in advance what the
majority think on the subject in-
volved.—Greenville Headlight.

"The Unworthy Trick."
The Messenger of last week had
about three quarters of a column
to say about the "unworthy trick"
of Joe Bailey, in which he pro-
posed tQ show a want of objection
in the senate to the passage of the
bill appropriating twenty millions
of dollars to pay for the Philippine
Islands, as provided for by the
Paris treaty between Spain and the
United States. Some of the Kauf-
man county papers reproduced the
article as a good thing for Chilton.
Now, it is probably not gener-
ally known that Mr. Chilton's
friends and supporters had for two
or three months been criticising
Mr. Bailey for voting for it, insist-
ing that he was thereby estopped
from opposing the policy of ex-
pansion. Mr. Bailey's vote was
recorded in favor of the bill and he
has never attempted to deny or
supplement the record of the house
proceedings on the passage of the
bill. The senate, having ratified
the treaty, its provisions became a
part of the law of the land, and the
obligations thereby created were
as binding upon the government
as any other and for congress to
have refused to appropriate tne
money to satisfy them, would have
been nothing short of repudiation.
The senate record exhibited by
Mr. Bailey shows that it was taken
up in that body by unanimous con-
sent, and passed without a protest
from anyone. No vote was re-
corded against it. But Mr. Chilton
says that he did vote against it,
but did not think it necessary to
call for a division or demand an
aye and nay vote.
It would haye been more credit-
able in Mr. Chilton to have voted,
as Mr. Bailey did, to pay rather
tnan tp repudiate the legal obliga-
tions of the government as he
claims to haye done, though the
record does not show him to be a
repudiator.—Greenville Headlight.

Ha U well
Many persons have their good
day and their bad ua7. Others
are about half sick all the time.
They have headache, backache,
and are restless and nervous.
Food does not taste good, and
the digestion Is poor; the skin
is dry and sallow and disfigured
with pimples or eruptions;
sleep brings no rest and work
is a burden.
What is the cause of all this?
Impure blood.
And the remedy?
It clears out the channels
through which poisons art
carried from the body. When
all impurities are removed from
the blood nature takes right hold
and completes the cure.
If there is constipation, take
Ayer's Pills. They awaken the
drowsy action of the liver; they
cure biliousness.

THAT CHRISTMAS.
BY MRS FANNY SWAN.
I've had no bappv reunion
Of friends ana kindred near
No more joyiul confusion
Than anv time in the year.
Yet, there is a feeling that awakes
Within my heart fondlv dear.
1 know it is horn of Heaven.
For Christmas is here
I've had no token of friendship,
From loved ones far or near.
No garlands are deftly wreathed.
For the occasion so sacred and j
dear,
No dulcet souni, but simply I feel
That Christmas time Is here
Oh! I think ot angels singing,
"So far away, yet so near "
I've had no Christmas dinner,
A sumptuous repast rare,
Mv table seems clothed in mourning
Of food it is almost bare
I doned a clean dress this morning
To honor the blessed day
"For cleanliness is a part ot Holi-
ness"
And I always choose that way.
I've heard no cheer'y voices,
No merry cbilds song, or laugh.
Not one extatic pleasure,
In Santa Clause behalf.
But I think of angels singing,
The same sweet song they sang.
"Peace on earth," it is ringing
As then o'er the hills it rang
The little hands that used to hang
The stockings by the chimney
shelf,
Have gone to grasp Heaven's gifts,
And i'me left alone by myself.
Oh! I think of angels singing
And they are among the band
Their little feet are softly treading
Gliding over the golden strand
Angel voices they seem to echo
From the distant far off skv,
Calling us from earth below,
To brighter scenes on high.
Oh! I think of angels singing
The old time seemes so nigh.
"Peace on earth and good will
Through my soul 'tis ringing still
Shepherds watching o'er their
flocks,
Heard the glad, joyful sound.
Judea's land was lighted around
The bow of Peace pierced its dart
In every believing heart.
Jesus the Savior had come.
His work of salvation begun,
And for us the victory won.
About a month passed away,
Since that memorable dav,
When Jesus in the manger lav.
Then wise men from the east afar,
In search of the j'oun? child came
They watched the brilliant siar,
Which guided them to Jerusalem
And to the famous Bethlehem
Until it stood over the house,
And to them entrance gave.
To worship Him who was to save
They their precious gifts bestowed
Returning unburden'd with a loa'l.
I can my all give to Jesus to-dav.
He will roll all mv burdens awav
i'lle sing praises to His birth day
I'me like a tired, wounded bird s
With broken wings, can't bp stirred,
I can not lift my soul to-night
Where angels sing in glory light
But to the lowly babe who came
To spare us all a life of shame
I can as did the Shepherds returning
Praise and glorify His name
"Eye hath not seen," the beauties
there
That to our charms will enhance
"Ear hath not heard the sounds of
joy"
That sweetly doth the soul en-
trance.
But just to think of angels singing
From that celestial land
And sweeter still to all who know
That they will join the band
There's many a poor one happy
This hallowed Christmas day,
Though they have not the comforts
That come to bless our way.
Happy because of the peace within
"The worid can't give, nor take
away.''
Thev will hear the angels singing
Sure enough in Heaven some day.
