v FRIDAY, APRIL 6, 1900.
Editinsr Without Knowledge.
Training is supposed to be necea-
Bary in ail professions except that of
editing a newspaper. A large num-
ber of educated men, not to say the
majority, have an idea that they
could take the helm in a daily jour-
nal and greatly improve its interest
to the public aud its moral character.
They are uot unaware that the past
«is filled with the wreckage of news
papers, and that where one has sur-
vived ten or twelve have perished.
In spite of this well-known fact,
thousands of men of all professions
would be ready to take the chair of
an editor-in-chief at an hour's notice,
and would rejoice in the opportunity
to test their air-drawn ideas and
original conceptions. They would
not expect or ask to be physicians,
lawyers, builders or railroad mana-
gist.
The main wheel of a watch makes

or center wheel, 8760; the third wheel
70,080; the fourth wheol, 525,600, and
the fifth or scape wheel, 4,751,860.

As a matter of fast, the duties of a j
responsible editor are more difficult
to master than those connected with
any any other profession and none
demand a wider range of experience
Every state in the Union can give
the names of eminent lawyers and
doctors, but how many can furnish
the name of even one eminent editor?
A capacity to write can never, taken
alone, constitute an editor. The
main responsibilities of an editor in
charge relate to a clear judgment
of men aud affairs, to

barbed wire fence; it will drive a
herd of cattle over a precipice; it will
drive a negro away from a chicken
roost, or a man into insauity who
stays five minutes within ten feet of
its unsavory presence. And vet
some men will sit up and eat the
stuff aud profegs to like it."

"Praise to the face, open dia
grace." No sucli thing; the
proverb is wrong. There is no
one thing calculated to bring
more pleasure to a fellow mor-
tal than a word of praise for
some good deed done, or noble
act accomplished. Praise to
the face is one of the sweetest
a
things on earth, and there is no
tinge of disgrace about it, un-
less untruth enters, or unless
the praiae is undeserved. Praise
should be given wherever mert-
ed, and for this sin of ominis-
sion we ought all of us to be
ashamed of ourselves a dozen
titles a day. It costs so little
to say nice things, and the reJ
suit in another's pleasure is
out of all proportion to our
trouble.
