TERRIBLE TRAGEDY ;IN ILLINOIS.
A HUSBAND BHOt BY BIS Witts AT THE BBD-
MDB OP HIS CHILDREN
A Rockford. lit i correspondent of the
Chicago Evening Post, gives the follow-
ing account of a tragedy in that place on
tbe 28th oi May :
The parties to this dread(nl affair were
married some three or four years ago in
this county, and have since then resided
in his city, the murdered man, Dixon, di-
viding his time between carrying on the
trade of a gonmaker, aud hunting game
for the Chicago market.
Something over a year ago trouble grow

since lira. Dixon returned to this city
and has been boarding with a family near
the residence of her husband. Four weeks
since she gave birth to another son. Both
before and since the birth of this child,
Dixon baa expressed his determination to
tftfeal it at the first opportunity, At the
request of Dixon a meeting was arranged
for yeaterday afternoon, at half past one
o'clock. He came, accompanied by the
child he bad carried off, which he permit-
ted the mothor to see, shake hands with
and kiss. After a fiveminutos interview,
Dixon aroso from his chair, remarking
''that it was time to be going." At this
he stepped to the bed where tho babe lay, say*
ing, "Would you like to kiss your little broth-

the bedside, tnsn bis wife fired two snots at
him from a revolver, one of which grazed his
left arm, thp other entering the hack, near the
left shoulder blade, passing through the lung,
and lodging in the breastbone. 60 quick was
the deed done that the witnesses in the
•room had no time whatever to interfere. Af-
ter the second shot wbb fired Dixon turned,
rushed upon his wife, wrenched tho pistol
from ber hand, and fled down stairs, when he
fell from th Affect of the wound. Medical aid
was at once called in, but tbe wound was mor-
tal—hejliviug y> great;sgony for one hour and
a half.
Immediately after the dreadful deed
Mrs. Dixon fainted, and up to 8 A, M.,
this morning, has not recovered from the
swoon. At first it was thought she had
taken some powerful drag, determined to
destroy her own life after taking that of
her husband. This however, was deolar -
ed after a thorough examination by some
of our most skillful fpbysioians not to be

the terrible mental excitement which she
has been subjected to, and the thought of
the dreadful tragedy in wnich she was the

In tne prosent excited state of the public
there is a diversity of opinion as to where
the most blame rests. There is,howover,a
very strong sentiment existing against Mr.
Lake, tbe'fatherof the woman. lie had

threats "against him, that lie would shoot
him should he have an opportunity. &c. It
is alleged that ho furnished the pistol and
urged hor to perform tho terrible deed.—
There is some talk of arresting him as ac -
cessory before the fact. As the public
mind becomesfcalm, we may expect to ar-
rive at a correct solution,. and place the
blame where it belongs, .

Chicago dispatch, dated May 80:
This morning a lady's cloak was found

Dear George :—It is not sin anger I

how fervently, passionately I love you,you
would not have deserted mo so cruelly.—
I loft my home, parents, everything for
yon, George, trusting to your love, for you
did love me once, and oh, how my
heart yearnB for a return of its devotion.
But I will not reproach you ; I am weary
and shall soon be at rest, and God, per-
haps,. Will forgive the error of a poor girl
so unworthy of his love. I have left my
watch for Mrs Foster to sond to my moth-

have pot up in a package forjrou. I would
not leave you, dear George, without a to-
ken of my love, and if this last act of mine
shall tonch your heart I shall be happy in
death. Pray forme. Good night, good
