T
man nuraed'Watson wore seen on the
bank, which there, ia very high. As old
man Lan , with Mw« EAffitrds and child,
wcro coming on board, one of the Darnells
took his portion at the head of the stairs
by the side of the "clerk, who was passing
down to escort the lady. As old man L:ino
started up the steps, Darnell drew up his
gun and fired, nineteen buckshot taking'
effect in Lane's left breast, killing bun in-
stantly; At the same moment the other
two a8sa88irife took aim nt young Lane and
Edwards, who were coming down tl\e bank,
and firing, both'fell dead, Edwards rolling
down the bank and Line falling over
against the bank. - Immediately after shoot
ing old man Lane, the fiontl who had com-
mitted the deed walked down stairs to Mrs
Edwards, and told her she hud better go
back and see what l^td become of her hus
band. ' After Edwards was dead, one of
these inhuman devils went to him. and
Elacing hisTevolver against the back of his
ead. fifefl, and thon turning him oven he
shot him through the forehead. They also
fired at Watson, who b«d accompanied the
Lanes to the boat, but missed him. The
bloody work was done so suddenly and so
unexpectedly that the officers of the boat
"were for a moment terror stricken, and be-
fore they had fully recovered the assa-sins
had left the boat, and mdeetl any attempt
at interference would doubtless have in-
volved a further loss of life, as'the three
desperadoes were armed to the touth. Af-
ter leaving the boat thov walked across
the neck of land to their horses; mounted
and rode away.
As soon as the awful tragedy becarao
known, the whole neighborhood turned i
out to hent down the assassins, who, ifj
found,, would no doubt receive summary
punishment. The Lanes were buried at
Island No. 10, and the Norman brought
the remains of Edwards to' llickman, to-
gether with his widow and child.
