My' irst penchant was for a fashionable olergy-
manr-be was !a flatterer, and cared but little
for mei though I bave not yet forgotten the
pang of his desertion. My next was a barris-
ter—a young roan of immense talent, smooth,
insinuating manners; but he, too, after walking,
talking, dancing, and flirting, left me. Either
of these would have been my choice, had [

and therefore I married him ; and this, I can-
not help thinking, must be the way, with half
the married folks of my acquaintance "
Home Affections.—The heart has affec-
tions that never die. The rough nibs of the
world eatinct obliterate them. They are the
memories of borne—ouly home. There is the
old tree, under which the light-hearted boy
has swune many a day ; yonder is the river in
wb'«h he leirned to swim; there is the house
in which he kew a parent's protection—nay,
there the room in which he romped with broth-
er and sister, long since laid in the yard in
whidb-he mustsoonbe gathered, over-shadowed
by yon old church, whither with a joyous troop
like bimsel! he had often followed his parent.*
to worship, nnd near the good old man
who ministered at the altar. Even the very
school-house frtsooiated in youthful days with
thoughts of tasks now comes to brin** pleas-
ant remembrance of many occasions that called
forth some generous exhibitions of noble traits
of human nature 'i here is. where he learned
to feel some of his first emotions. , There, per-
chance, he first met the being who, by her love
and tenderness in iilj> has made a home for
himself happier than that which hit childhood
has kr.own. There are certain feelings of hu-
manity—and those, too amoug the best—that
can fir d no uppropriatc place for their exercise
onlv at one's fireside.

The plaaa del Tarns, at Havana, was the
« a novel entertainment, on Sunday, the
15&—-a flgltt between a tiger and three blood
hounds. One of tbe dogs was instantly killed
at the commencement of the battle, and the
otber two disabled. Tet the umpire decided
that the tiger was beaten. There was a large
eonconrse of people in attendance.
New York, April 18.—The general confer-
ence of the Methodist episcopal church north,
some days in session here, have rejected the
resolution excluding slaveholders from mem-
bership in the ehurch, by a vote of 125 nays
to 42 ayes. V •
New York, April 25.—Advices received
from St. Marks, St. Domingo, speak of the de-
molition of sevetal large buildings by earth-
quake. It is supposed that other places on the
island were visited by similar shocks.
Newport, R. I., April 19 —A lar^e fire took
place in this city yesterday, by which the wharf
owned by Mr. Williams and a woolen mill, were
destroyed. The loss is estimated at 8100,000
—all of which is covered by insurance.
Chicago, April 19.—The house and machine
shop, together with four locomotives belong
ing to the Illinois Central railroad, have been
completely destroyed'by fire. The loss is large,
but a great part oi the property is covered by
insurance.
What Next.—The Louisville Couiier de-
scribe a knitting machine which has made
its appearance in that city. It says:
It did up nearly a whole stocking ri^ht be-
fore our eyes. And such knitting we never
saw before. It was fnr ahead of the stitches
of the f.n ttio.-t b-iy in the country, with the
old fashior*;d needles, knitting iway and singing
a sweet litt-ie sr ?ig. It seemed to us to make
stoct'ugs about as i'.ut as haifa hundred ladies
in their fce-t knitting mood and talking hu-
mor.
The machine itself, in the sljnpo of a lady's
workstand, is very pretty. It is constructed
for u«e and diirabHty, with great neatness and
simplicity- It does its wnrk to perfection and
does it wilH j.Teat rapidity. It occupies no
more spacf; than a small workstand, and can be
operated l.y a child. All that is necessary to
make it knit is to turn a crank, and the knit-
ting is thnn d •«" fast or slow, accovdiug to the
revelations of the wheel—though it would be
difticnlr t(> turn it-low enough not to knit as
fast as half dczen of our ^riiml-iuamasat a

Hydrophobia Empiricism.—The London
Morning Star says :
Some time ago a statement appeared in all
the journals that ten persons had been bitten
by a mad dog at Authon (Eure-et-Loire ) The
Journal de Chartres now announces the death
of the fourth victim, a little girl, who had ap-
peared quite well till three four day back, when
the dreadful malady appeared and carried-her
off in a few hours. The six other persons bit-
ten seem to be out of all danger. The same
paper then proceeds: "Thiity years ago three
persons of that village were bitten by a mad
f'og. Two of tbem applied to a man who was
said to possess an infalliable cure for hydropho-
bia, handed down from father to son tor sever-
al generations. They both got well, while the
third, who applied to a regular practitioner,
died a few days after. This fact was univers-
ally known in the country round, and when
the last sad affair occurred, six of the persons
bitten applied to the son of the empiric, who
now possesses his father's secrct, the other
four being treated by professional men. The
result is that the six survivors are those who
had recourse to the secret remedy, while the
four who have died were treated by the facul-
ty. We cannot explain these facts, but we can
guarantee their authenticity."
Personal.—When a low. ill-mannered
blackguard, fails in fairly meeting just criti-
cism, he seldom hesitates in using vituperative
and abusive language as an offsett. Such per-
sons, unfortunately, sometimes becomc conduc-
tors ot newspapers, which under previous man
agement, have been made respectable.—Stuff-s

end to another. He returned to New York,

certainty, was battened, if not originated, by
the unfortunate position of his chamber. The
lesson is, that the family nom, the sleeping
apartment, the study, in short', any apartment
which is occupied for t.hn greater part of the
twenty-four hours, should have its windows fa-
cing the south, as nearly as possible, so that
the glad sunshine may lighten it up, ana keep
it warm, and dry acd pure.—Hull's Journal

A TEi:tiuu,K Meeting.—For some time
past a house of ill-fame has annoyed the oiti-
zeus of a village on the line ot the Cleveland
and Columbus Railroad, and it was determined
that the house should be broken up. On Thurs-
day night'the Marshal of the village made a
descent upon the house, took the in mates into
oustody, and yesterd :y morning they were taken
before a magistrate for examination. 1 here were
three girls among the prisoners, and as the eye
of the magistrate fell upon one of them he
grew deadly pale, and hastily adjourned the
Co irt. Among those wrctched and abandoned
girls he recognized the once fair features of his
own daughter!—S^vtral years before, while
attending a female seminary in an Eastern
State, she had eloped with a worthless fellow,
and her father had never heard of her or seen
her until that terrible morning Deserted by
her husband she adopted a life of prostitution,
and found her way to the far West. Her fath-
er, unknown to her, moved also to the West,
and settled in the village above alluded to.—

The Manufacture of Paper.—The Ho-
bart Town Mercury >?raws attention to the bark
of the tea tree which abounds in the forests of
Tasmania, as admirably adapted for the manu-
facture of paper. Nature itself manufactures
paper from it of her own accord During the
summer months, when the trees shed their
leaves and bark, Ihes/ accumulate in the gul-
lies and dry crceks. So soon as tjiey are
brought into contact with the water they form
of themselves a thick pulp, which spreads it-
self over thy uneven surface of the water-
courses, and which, after it has been deser-
ted by the water, remains spread out into a
huge sheet of stiff brown paper.
A story is related of a medical student, who,
once upon a time, entered the terrible green-
room to be examined for his degree of M. D.
Elated at the prospect before him, and know-
ing that Dr. Payne hold the lancet, to be a uni-
versal cure, he had drank decidedly too much
whisky. On go:ng into the green room the
venerable professor told the tipsy student to
Mbe seated." Ilis mind being muddy, and«
thinking th<i professor had .asked him some
question of .treatment. Bolus, Jr., returned the
patent answer: " Why, I'd bleed him!" " I
guess you didn't understand me ?" remarked
the professor. " Then, bv hokey, I'd set him
up and bleed him again !" responded Bolus.
