"I don't know, madam, that
she is."
"It is a wonder to me, Capt.

"Well, ma'am, I never think

least, in the power of everyone.
He who is lint an idiot has a fac-
ulty of memory, and the
strength oi any faculty can, by
exercise and cultivation, be in-
creased. Those who .do riot en-
deavor to cultivate it are guilty
of culpable neglect, and should
not be allowed to plead forget-
fulness in palliation of any
omission or neglect.
We know a clergyman whose
power of memory is so great as
to beem wonderful, the result
almcwt entirely of cultivation.
In fact, we have heard' hirii say
that when he was young he was
so forgetful as to be constantly
under a cloud in consequence.
One diiy, when something more
serious then usual had resulted
from this failing, lie determined
to overcome it, and from that
moment resolved that his mem-
ory should d.o for him its ap-
pointed worjs, and foreed it into
action* He allowed himself to
mate no memorandums or aids
to memory, but' demanded that
the faculty should 'wort for his
assistance. The result is he has
but few equals in the country in
this respect, ,
' Different in this respect is a
gentleman who Jives on one of
the up-sown avenues, in New
York, and who, for the last ten
years, has immediately aiter
