Tho National Intelligencer thinks it
would be a curious and instructive sta-
tistical fact to know how many of the
kith and kin of the majority in Con«
gress are ensconced in public offices.
It says: " We should like to see the
matter closely looked into. If we are
not y^ry much mistakon, tho investi-
gation would show an amount of ne-
potism unparalleled in modern soci-
ety."
'■* The New York Herald's Fortress
Monroe correspondent says that 31r.
Davis is highly gratified at the arrest
of John II. Surratt. He sees his way
to a full proof of his innocence, it is
asserted, through Snrratt*B testimony,
and, even if the captured fugitive
should make the charges against Davis
that it is rumored he will, t^e latlei
expresses himself fully able to ais*
prove them." -
A Wagon Mistress.—Tho Colorado
Times says that a woman has gone
Ainto the freighting business between
[Nebraska City and Denver. She owns
a wagon train, which «he conducts
herself, receiving her freight, hiring
her hands, and superintending the
loading and discharging.
John Siukatt.—As the Swatara. ou
which on the 21st, Surratl sailed from
Alexandria, Egj*pt, is a small screw
steamer, and therefore probably very
slow, the prisoner will not, it is be-
lieved, reach America before the end
of next month.
CniLD Murder.—At the semi-annual
meeting of the Rhode Island Medical
Society at Waren, a few days since,
resolutions were adopted doclaring the
destruction of the life of unborn chil-
dren to be murder, and in view of the
increasing frequency of this offence,
asking the Legislature to make it a
heinous crime. A recent flagrant case
at Providence led to this action.
The Freed men's Bureau estimates
the colored population of Texas at

Virginia, North Carolina, South Caro-

Louisiana, Texas, Missouri, Arkansas
and Tennessee is estimated at 3,260,-

Law Securing the Wife's Proper-

Georgia Legislature, and s'gued by
the Governor, providing that all prop-

marriage, whether real or personal,
or chooses in action, shall be and ro-
main her separate property; and that

shall not be liable for the payment of
any debt, default, or contract of the

Tt Wheat Scitly Question.—A
correspondent of the St. Louis Demo-
crat in Allen county, Kansas, Dec.
17th, says in this county there is plen-
ty of wheat to BUpply four times her
population with flour. Our wheat is
principally in first hands. Corn is
plenty also. As for prices, wheat is

From all parts of the State the same
account is true.
The grand project of drawing off
the waters of lake Tahoe, on the top
of the Sierra i.erada, through Cali-
fornia, about two hundred miles, to
San Francisco, supplying the city, and
others on the route, with pure wator,
and lurnishing water power for mills
and mines, is arousing opposition and
alarm in Nevada. The waters of the
lake now come down this side of the
mountain into the latter State, and
her lawyers say California has no
right to steal them and carry them off
to tho Pacific ocean.
Egypt has this year produced a cot

Washington, Jan. 12.—Ti e House
Judiciary Committee aro tai* njr no
testimony and examining no witnesses
on the impeachment of tho President.
There is authority for saying that hav-
ing considered the proofs submitted
by Mr. Ashley, they have arrived at
tho conclusion that thcro are not suffi-
cient grounds on which to baso a bill
of impeachment. It is tho general
impression that unless some of tho nu-

For several months past officers of
tho topographical engineer corps have
been making surveys and examina-

site for tho new Presidential mansion.
They arc now making up their report,
and it is said to havo selected for the
