K is. perhaps not known at a distance that tho
'rgsteeaof AUSTIN COLLEGE, at their last
meeting* gave encouragement to a preparatory school,
which haviug been put tu operation by Rev. Sahuel
McKiknet, President of the College, is now in a flour-
ishing condition. The Elementary, Classical, and
Mathematical Departments are each well sustained.
Da. McKinney has the assistance of Rev. B. Scott
and Mr. Francis Geokoe Cdmmings, gentlemen well
qualified as teachers; and by their aid fifty students
are prepariug for the higher branches of College study.
The foundation for the main building of the Col-
lege is already opened, the contracts in the hands of
responsible men, and without some unlooked for hin-
drance, the bnilding will be completed in about 12
months, and the first sossion opened, wi'h a number
of young men already trained under the eye of Preei-a,
dent McKinnf.y. Those wSio deiire to give their sons
a complete education, will find such desire gratified by
placing them under the care of the able Teachers now
engaged at Huntsville.

placed in one of your safest purchased from Mr. Marvin some
years ngo. My fears were not allayed when I found it-necessary
upon my return to apply, the Croton Water 40 hours before 1
was enabled to commence operations: af er which it required
54 hours of laboi and application M raise the Salamander from
its ashy bed. You may judge of my anxiety during this, delay,
and my agreeable surprise upteppening the safe in the prefence
of a number of gentlemen,- tjlwl my books and payers saved,

heat to which the Palo waa subjected, can be eonjecttired from
the conditio n , of another safe, (not a Salamander) of which an
iron skeleton only remained, and not a vestige of a hook. They
were companions in the same office, on i$e second floor, from
which they tell upon crates of earthen ware in the cellar tbe ru-

the insurance is $1,900, yet tbe salvation of my books in your Sal-

Sacrti Scent* and CkaraeUrt—By the Riv. J. T. Ileadley
This work may very proper ley be coasidered a companion to the
"Sacred Mountains," by the same author. Its object is to illus-
trate ami "render more life-like" the saered writings. It is not
tbe author's design to supercede the Bible. But his wi.\h to cx-
citea solici ude to obtain, and to become intimately acquainted
and perfectly familiar with its history, doctrine* and laws ; to
know its truth, to imbibe its spirit, feel its power, nnd partake ol
its salvation; in s word, to prize in some measure as it deserves,
this treasure which is indeed beyond price. We predict for it a
circulation far beyond any of the author's former works. — The

Sacred Scentt and Character. — By the Rev. J. T. Ileadley,
author of the "Sacred Mountains," tic. This work will add
greatly to the reputation of the author. IsJitcrsry merit it more
than equals his "Sacred Mountains." Mr. Ueadley excels in his
glowing style and vivid descriptions. His works are a rich trea-
sure of al! the sublimity of thought, moving tenderness of passion,
and vigorous ulrength ofezpre sien, whieh are to be found iu all
the lanjuagas by which mortals declare their minds.—See Daily

Rambles and Sket^es. — By Rev. J. T. Hcadley. — We have
not for a long time sat down to a hook with more pleasing antici-
pations, or found those anticipations more fully realized, than in
the perusal of the work before us, and we know it w-'ll be boiled
with gratification by the many admirers ol tbe talented author.
"His "Napoleon and bis Marshals" was. perhaps, as popular, and
found at least a many enthusiastic -eaders as any book tluit can
l>e mentioned. We think the Rambles and Sketches are desti-
ned to be as popular at least as any of his priviously published
works. There is not a dull chapter in the work, filled os it is win
"au infinite variety." The author has ample room mid verce
enough for the employment of his fine talents to great advantage,
and most snccesfully has he accomplished the lask. The biogra-
phical sketch of the author is interesting and "well considered,"
and adds much to the valne of-the book, which is got np in a
very neat and attractive style by the publisher. — S'm Portland

The changes of weather and season, with die change of nse
