On the lirsl day of this nuAntli
Sheriff Crnger inspected tliv bell
punches in. this county, neeo'ii-
ing to law. The time the reg-
ister had been in use was two
.nOhths and nine days; three
for alcoholic and three malt
ors. The total amount of
revenue to the state and county,
as reported by the registers, is
$394.02 for spirituous, and
$27.08 for malt liquors; total,
$421.70.
A report for the month of Oc-
tober/made by the bell punch
clerk in the comptroller's office
at the capital shows the largest
amount collected in any one.
county for October last, was
from Travis county, with forty
alcoholic and lifty-threo malt
registers, $1,590.47, an average
of $18.37 per month for each reg-
ister: Shackelford county•" re-
turns .for November show an
average of $29.04.
Counting the voting popula-
tion of this county at 500, and
of the state 300,000, the state
should receive a revenue of
$3,201,245.68 a year from the
registersV taking the registers in
this county as an average,
After deducting commissions
and one-third of the amount,
which goes to treasury of coun-
ties, we have a net income to the
state of $1,394,122.22 per year.
At this rate it would require but
a short time to pay the State
debt, which is about $5,500,000.
It would se«m however that all
the saloon keepers in the state
do not "puuch with care," us
Galveston county, with one hun-
dred and fifty registers averaged
$5.05 per register in October.
Sheriff W. R. Cruger desires
to return thanks to all, saloon
men especially* for courtesy and
aid in collecting and obtaining
monthly statements of sales.
The showing speaks well for
a frontier county which lias
heretofore been considered one
of the law-breaking ones —now
every thing is peace and harmo-
ny. During the past two and a
half-months not one oftense of a
criminal nature has been coirt-
mitted in the county.

of the District Court:
To the Hon. J. It. Flemmlng, District
We, the grand jury, empan-

term of your court, would're-
spectfully report that we have
diligently and fathfuily inquired
into all causes that have come
before ns, and such other mut-
ters as were given to us in
charge by your honor before
entering upon our duties:
We have been in session five
dayB and have presented during
that time eight bills, nearly all
of these are offenses we did not
expect. We nre happy to re-
port to your honor that Shack
el ford county, in our opinion, is
in a more prosperous condition.
Sheriff!and has less lawlessness and
a crime than ever before since its
organisation, and we find the
citizens determined to enforce
the law.

into the bell punch law and
have failed to discover by any
means at our command any -vi-

act.
We desire to return your hon-

thanks tire also duo to our effi-
