Attempted Bsrglarj-Kscapc «f the
Thief—Vigilance of the Police.
Early yesterday morning the
attention of Officer Hayden was
attracted by a noise in the neigh-
borhood of Travis street. Sus-
pecting that something wrong
was going on, he cautiously pro-
ceeded in the direction of the
noise, and was* rewarded for his
diligence by finding, at
smith's drug sroBfi, * '
the evidence that some thief
either was inside or had been.
Striking a light, he raised one
of the windows and entered. On
the sill he found a two pound
weight and a'brickbat, which the
thief had evidently left there as a
matter of precaution, to defend
himself in case of detection and
attack.
A further examination showed
that a thief had been in the store,
but had made his exit, taking
with him, however, the key.
Evidently the officer's vigilance
saved the store from robbery.

Late Thursday evening, we met
with a Sergeant belonging to com-
pany A of the 25th Infantry, and
from him learned that the com-
pany took up the line of march at
3 o'clock on that evening. The
soldier, Jim. White, went to the
camp before the company started
and came near being mobbed, and
was compelled to seek safety in
flight.
We learn from officer Lyons
that about ten members of Co. A,
25th Infantry, deserted from the
company on the night of the 8th.
We suppose they objected to
leaving San Antonio and thought
by deserting they could once in a
white come in and would not pro-
bably be molested.

Editors Houston Mercury: *
By the perusal of your most
valuable journal we see that the
name of Cornelius M. Noble, of
the firm of Noble & Gsegg, has
been announced for some time as
a candidate for the office of Sheriff
of Harris County, gobject to the
decision of the Democratic Nomi-
nating Convention, which con
venes at Houston shortly. We
have known Mr. Noble for many
years. He was born and reared
among us, and i we feel confident
in making t®sL&ssertion, that, if
he receives tfe*®omination, he
will certainly|run far ahead of
any of his competitors now before
the people. Not only is he iden-
tified by birth and residence with
Harris county, but he has largely
invested his money in real estate;
carries ou business as a merchant;
stands well in the estimation ot
the community, and is in constant
connection with the whole country
population. He is a gentleman
universally known and esteemed
by all, besides possessing all of
those elements, that go to make
up worth and form the character
of a first-class man. If the people
will entrust him with their confi-
dence hie will not betray it.

Love and Snow.—A newly mar-
ried man took his bride on a tour
to Switzerland for the honeymoon,
and, when there, induced her to
attempt with him the ascent of
one of the high peaks. The lady,
who at home had never ascended
a hill higher than a church, was
much alarmed and had to be car-
ried by the guides with her eyes
blindfolded, so as not to witness
the horrors of the passage. The
bridegroom walked close to her,
expostulating with her respecting
her fear. He spoke in honeymoon
whispers; but "We rarefaction of
the air was such that every word
was audible. "You told me,
Leonora, that you alwaysfelt hap-
py—no matter where you were—so
long as you were in my company.
Then why are you not happy
now!" i4Yes, Charles, I did," re-
plied she, sobbing hysterically;

A Great Horror Done Away With.
House cleaning is greet horror to sine
men out of every ten. When that time
comes-the " men folks," as a rule, give the
domestic hearth a "wide berth." Oceans
of suds—the product of tons of soap—fairly
flood every part of tho-faowse. The women,
from the mistress down, labor as they never
worked before, and -what with the discom-
fort, the smell ©f soda and the dampness,
and not unfrequently sickness, the product
of colds and overwork, matters are gener-
ally disagreeable. The simple use of Sapolio
-instead of soap does away with all this
discomfort. It lightens the labor a hundred
per cent., because it removes dirt, grease,
stains and < spots, with hardly, any labor,
with bat little water. and in one-tenth th6
nasal time. , n >

of the Democratic party now is to

What agitates the public mind
