Jaokaon County and Japan.
In Japan, perhaps the most ut-
terly modern and "up-to-date"
country now on the map, there ia
one divorcc to about every three
marriages. Figures that justly
alarm msisionaries and many oth-
er persons in Japan and out of it.
Jackson county, Mo., is the sec-
ond county in importance in that
state. It contains Kansas City, a
large, spirited and precipitous
town.
The Kansas City Journal prints
some statistics gathered by Rev.
Dr. R. H. Fife in regard to mar-
riages and divorces in Jackson
county. It appears from the of-
ficial record that 3,076 marriage
licenses were issued in 1903, and
that 1,076 petitions for divorce
were filed in the county circuit
court. Not all these petitions
were granted, but the proportion
of unsuccessful marriages in Jack-
son county is shown to be a little
more than one for every three.
And many of the marriage licen-
ses went to divorced persons.
So Jackson county is a littla
ahead of Japan.
Prospect Strenuous.
A dry goods merchant was ex-
plaining the situation to the new
traveler he bad just engaged.
"Your predecessor," he said, "has
got his business all tangled up, and
if you take his place you will have
a difficult task getting order out of
chaos.".
"I don't know who Chaos is,"
cheerfully replied the newly ap-
pointed traveler, "but I bet you I'll
sell him some goods, if I luve to
hang onto (him a week."

Cured of Chronic Diar-
rhoea After Ten Years
of Suffering. ,
"I wish to say a fe<v words in
praise of Chamberlain's Colic,
Cholera and Diarrhoea Remedy,"
says Mrs. Mattie Burge, of Mar-
tinsville, Va. "I suffered from
chronic diarrhoea for ten years
aud during that time tried vari-
ous medicines without obtaining
any permanent relief. Last
summer one of my children was
taken with cholera morbus, and
I procured a bottle of this rem-
edy. Only two doses were re-
quired to give ber entire relief.
I then decided to try the medi-
cine myself, and did rot use all
of one bottle before I waf well
and 1 have tuver since been
troubled with that complaint.
One cannot say too much in fa-
vor of that wonderful medicine."
This remedy is for sale by all
druggists.
No False Claims
The proprietors of Foley's
Honey aud Tar do not advertise
this as a "cure for consump-
tion." They do not claim it will
cure this dread complaint in ad-
vanced casus, but do positively
assert that it will cure in the
earlier stages and never fails to
givo comfort and relief in tbe
worst cases. Foley's Honey and

The preject of the Japanese of
New York to raise $5,000,000 to
aid their home country in its war
with Russia will perhap* excite
surprise at the size of the gift con-
templated. There is, however, no
doubt of their ability to "finance"
their patriotism to the extent
promised. The importance ot
Japanese business interests in the
city is not generally realized. A
quarter ef a century ago the Jap-
anese commercial houses of con-
sequence in this country could be
numbered on the fingers of one
hand. They are now very num-
erous and almost uniformly pros-
perous. With the beginning of
tbe new order of things in the isl-
and kingdom there set in a tide of
emigration to the United States
which last year reached the large
number of 19.968.
That is say, more than half
as many Japanese came as Irish
and very nearly half as many as
came from Germany. Scotland
sent only one-third as many.
France one-fourth and Spain one-
ninth. They brought with them
an intelligence and industry, an
adaptability to occupation rang-
ing from the kitchen to the count-
ing room and a spirit of good citi-
zenship by which the nation has
been largely the gainer. The
"Yankees of the East" fit very
quickly and well into the Yankee-
dorn of the West.
Saved from Terrible
Death
The family,of Mrs. M. L. Bob-

her dyirg and were powerless
to save her. The most skilled
physicians and every remedy
used, failed, while consumption
was slowly but surely taking
her life. In this terrible hour
Dr. King's New Discovery for

to ioy. The first bottle brought
mmediate relief and its contin-
ued use completely cured her.

Questions About the Canal.
The Panama canal commission-
ers are now asking pertinent quea-
tions concerning the most impor-
tant project before the civilized
world. Here is a poser for all
Americans who have not heard it
before: "How far east of the city
of Panama, on the Pacific, is the
city of Colon, on the Caribean?"
The usual answer is, "About for-
ty miles," or the length of the
canal, which is just forty-two
miles wrong, Co!on being two
miles west of Panama instead of
forty miles east. Question No. 2:
"What is the general direction of
the canal?" The answer will be:
East and west," which is pre-
cicely wrong, as it is north and
south.
Was Very, Very Qratefut
Convincing proof was furnlihed
Washington a day or two ago of
the fact that conitituenta are grate-
ful at least sometimes. A congress-
man had been asked to use hia in-
fluence in securing a job for a vot-
er in his district. He did ao and
failed to land his man. The latter
on being notified of what had oo>
curred, wrote a letter, in which ha
'.aid: "I cannot close without again
acknowledging my thanks. No lan-
guage is ridi enough to express my
grAtitude. No sentiment, however
sublime, is lofty enough to reveal
the obligation I feel. Though I go

joy and pride and an inspiration '.o
ever higher thought and action.
God grant, and I cann .t help but
bHieve he will spare me, that again
some day I may help to crown you."
A friend of the congressman read
this gushing epistle and inquired:
"What did he want?" "A $900
clerkship." "Great ScOtt' I won

The value of music as a factor In
war is being recognized by both
sides in tlte struggle in the Far
East. We are told that the Jap-

the recent battle; and, :f what we
hear of their vocal abilities be true,
this alone was enough to make the
Russians want to run away. Now
the St. Petersburg Nevosti state#
that a number of popular bards aad
