Christmas At Belton.
The people of Belton and the
surrounding country have enjoy-
ed themselves during the holi-
days to the fullest extent. The
■weatli&r vt'jis ideal, permitting of
out-door pleit^ircs. Many hunt-
ing parties were out and reports
are that plenty of & -me was
found, and those who are expert
with the gun came back with
plenty of birds, squirrels and
other game.
In the city tie re wore no ac-
cidents to mar the pleasures.
The usual indulgences which
make't unpleasant for the pub-
lic were kept in bminds by our
efficient city marshal and his
special deputies. Aside from
the occasional explosion of tire-
crac:c rs by mischievous boys,
everything was exceptionally
quiet. All during the holidays
there was very little drunken-
ness, and no rowdyism at all. In
conversation with Marshal Hale
the reason lor this splendid con-
dition was explained by the fact
that he and his force did not wait
until the laws were violated, but
kept watch and precluded acts
that might lead_ to violations.
Our marshall has the right con-
ception of his duties in this re-
spect, as the central idea of laws
is the prevention of crime, and
the officer who conies nearer the
idea is the better one.
Christmas eve and Christmas
nights were duly celebrated all
over town by tire works displays
at times the heavens being beau-
tifully illuminated with Roman
candles and sky-rockets, and the
constant roar of the big cannon
crackers was a reminder of a
happy Christmas.
There were numerous social
functions during the week, which
will receive attention in our so-
cial column in the Friday issue.
|r The Democrat hopes that ev-
eryone enjoyed Christmas, and
wishes for one and all a happy
and prosperous New ^ear.

Fhilatheas.
Last Monday evening the Phi-
latheas class of the Baptist Sun-
day school was highly entertain-
ed in the home of Mr. and Mrs.
Nigro, by the Baraca's, who have
just recently organized, al-
though the time seemed short,
all tliyse present entered hearti-
: ly into all amusements thought-
fully planned by the pre
j the class, and we had
j ful time. We were indeed glad i
j to have with us one of our for-
mer members, Mrs. Loui-e!
; Robinson, also one of Belton's j
i most promising joung men, M r.
I Sneed Blanton, who has been
away for some time. After re-
freshments were served on iui-
promtu program was rendered
by some members of the Phila-
theas. We hope occasions of
this kind may be tiften repeated, i
and if there is any young lady
or gentleman in Belton, who is j
not a member of any Sunday
school, we feel sure you would
never regret entering either of
these respective classes and we
would gladly welcome you.
We realize there is a great
work for us, and we yet need
more help. Let every Philathea
awal<e to her duty as never be-
fore and at least be a strength
to our Baraca brothers.

A Heartily Welcomed Visitor.
Possibly one of the most dis-
tinguished and highly appreciat-
ed visitors in the city during the
holidays was Mr. H. R. Robert-
son of Cordell, Ga. His visit is
incidentally social and particu-
larly business, as he is here I
with a view of accepting the
management and superintend-
ence' of the Belton cotton mill,
which will most likely be in oper-
ation within a short time. Mr. J
Robertson comes to Belton with i
the highest recommendations as
a cotton mill expert, and should
he decide to accept the position,
the plant will be started to run-
ning at once
This mill has had many draw-
backs and much to discourage
the owners within the past year
or so, and for more than half a
year the splendid machinery has
been sta uling still, and it is hop-
ed upon Mr. Robertson's assum-
ing control, the large army of
employees will again be put to
work, and thus heir) to swell the

That of Hamlet It the Longest of
Them All.
The longest part in any Shake-
spearean play is Hamlet, who is be-
fore the audience almost constantly.
Hamlet is a constant talker, and it
is surprising that in the circum-
stances he says so many wise things,
lie has to his share 1,5G9 lines.
Richard III. is another long part, as
the character speaks 1,101 lines,
next conies Iago, with 1,117 lines.
Henry V. has 1,003 lines.
One would suppose from seeing
the representation or from looking
over the play that Othello had more
lines than logo, but it is not the
enso, for the valiant Moor has onlv
888 lines. Coriolanus has 88(1, the
duke in "Measure For Measure" 880
and Timon 883. Antony in "An-
tony and Cleopatra" does not seem
a very loner part, judging by the nr>-
pcarance of the prompt book, but in
reality he has S.'iO lines.
Brutus in "Julius Caesar" has
727, Falstaff in "Henry V." 71!).
Macbeth appears a long part, judg-
ing from how much he is on ti.e
stage in the representation, but in
fact he lias only 705 lines. Romto
has G18, which is only a few more
than the king in "Hainlot." who lias
551. Cassias in "Julius Caesar," al-
though a first class part, lias but 507
lines.
The female parts in Shakespeare's
plays are not very long. The actress
who plays Portia has 5S9 lines to
study. Rosalind has 7-19. Cleopatra
has 670 and Juliet 541. Desdemora
has only 389. Beatrice has 309.
Only twenty of Shakespeare's wo-
men have more than 300 lines each,
and some of the most famous of the
great hard's feminine creations have
comparatively little to say. Cor-
delia in "King Lear" has only 1.5
lines. Kate in "Taming of the
Shrew," although fo conspicuous
and voluble, has but 229, while Lady
Macbeth has but 211.
Kangaroo to Be Served.
New York. Dec. 23.—Kangaroo meat
Is to be served in New York hotels, a
local dealer having arranged for the
importation of Ift'i of the animals for
use as food. The tall is considered
the greatest delicacy but almost every
cut Is said to be jjood eating by those
who have sampled it. The dealer who
hopes to meet with success In his new
venture says he thinks New Yorkers
will take to kangaroo meat In the
same way Europeans like specialties
such as wild turkey and quail.
Mrs. .T. D. Young is spending
