THE THRESHES

Religion On Campus
Chapel Library Open To All
By DICK VIEBIG
Thresher Religion Editor
On the north side of the Rice
chapel, a small room with an in-
conspicuous sign on the door that
says Chapel Reading Room has
gone unnoticed by many students.
Inside, however, more and more
students and faculty members
are finding Rice's religious li-
brary one of the friendliest and
most interesting places on cam-
pus.
Contemporary Library
This library was made possible
by Mr. J. Newton Rayzor, and
his annual gift maintains this as
an unusually contemporary li-
brary, almost all of the 1600
volumes having been, published
between 1957 and 1959. The
works cover philosophy of re-
ligion, psychology of religion,
bible commentary, devotional
classics, and studies of the vari-
ous religions; and none of the
books are duplicates of those in
Fondren Library.
Growing Circulation
The growing circulation of the
religious library seems to be in-
dicative of the growing interest
in all phases of religious life on
campus, the library furnishing
material for the study programs
of the campus religious organiza-
tions.
Mrs. Leon Meeks is the helpful
librarian in addition to her duties
as secretary for the Religious
Council.
To help in acquainting both
students and faculty with the ex-
cellent material available in this
library, the following review of
one of the most popular books in
the library (several copies are
available) is presented. The re-
view is by Mr. John Arnold,
Presbyterian Associate Univer-
sity Pastor at Rice.
DYNAMICS OP FAITH—Paul Tilllch
Harper Torch Brooks, New York; 1957
There are very few men alive to-
day with the intellectual depth range,
and integrity of Paul Tillich, Univer-
sity Professor at Harvard. He evi-
dences a grasp of theology, philosophy,
depth psychology, and contemporary
art forms that is utterly astounding.
Perhaps there is no better introduc-
tion to TUHch's thought than his little
classic, "Dynamics of Faith." Seldom
does a book say so much in so few
(127) pages.
Defeat Weiss, 7-0
Hanszen Takes Title
Hanszen College with all-in-
tramural Eddie Sivess at the
helm, defeated Wiess College 7-0
in the finals of the Inter-College
football tournament.
Sivess hit big Jack Lowe for
an early tally, which eventually
proved to be the margin of vic-
tory. Outstanding on the excellent
Hanszen defense unit were Tom
Broad and Don Ramsey. For the
losers Don Erskine tossed three
touchdown passes to Larry Stew-
art, but the big Wiess man was

It took a heap of learning,
dear ... To make me what
I am . . . Four years of

(And I'm a radio ham!) . . .
I made a telescope, my pet
... It is thirteen inches wide

through it ... I feel all warm
inside ... You ought to see
my private lab ... In our
garage at home . . . It's
there I spend my summer
nights . . . Instead of sipping
foam . . . And if you think
I'm kidding ... I can show

casion.
Russell Bowers provided the
receiving talent as the men of
Hanszen advanced to the finals
with a 15-0 victory over Will
Rice. The Will Rice squad failed
to cash in on three penetrations.
Wiess romped to an easy 28-6
win over Baker in early action.
Erskine pin pointed Stewart and
Lee Raesner for Wiess scores
while a Jim Hay pass found Jack
Hollon for the Baker tally.
SC0NA Set
For December 16
SCONA, Texas A & M's Stu-
dent Conference on Student Af-
fairs, is scheduled to commence
Wednesday, December 16, to last
until Saturday. The annual af-
fair features national political
leaders as guest speakers, and is
l'epresented by colleges within a
general 500 mile area.
The program centers around
studen t-led discussion study
groups, high-lighted in the past
by such well-known individuals
as General Carlos Romulo, Lyn-
don Johnson, Hubert Humphrey,
and Time Magazine's John Scott.
Along the same general lines is
West Point's Student Conference
on United States Affairs, held
generally about the same time of
year. The special guests for both
conferences have not yet been
announced.
Rice in the past has been rep-
resented on the average by two
students at SCUSA and three at
SCONA. Those that wish to be
considered should apply to Dr.
Francis L. Lowenheim in the
History Department or Dr. Har-
din Craig in the Library. Rice rep-
resentatives will be selected from
the applications by a committee
made up of faculty members.

The controlling idea of this book is
that faith is not atosnea of doubt nor
adherence to theological or historical
affirmations. Rather it la "ultimate
concern"—the beliefs, values, ate. to
which man give* his ultimate allegi-
ance. In this sense every man—atheist,
skeptic or theist—has faith, be it in
himself, progress, the nation, or what
have you.
Yet faith has an objectivs as well as
a subjective side, and the object of
one's ultimate concern is of crucial
importance. Tillich sees life as the
shattering of false faiths. When one's
ultimate concern is not rooted in the
Ultimate Ground of Being, it inevit-
ably crumbles.
No brief summary can begin to do
justice to this work. It is heartily
recommended for your reading and
study.
