Scams continue locally
BY TATIANA RODRIGUEZ
Managing Editor
Another overseas scam has recently hit Sweetwater.
According to Sweetwater Police Officer Danny Heine,
a local business was the victim of a scam involving a
counterfeit money order sent to the Philippines by a
local resident.
The business owner reported to Heine that the cus-
tomer had cashed a money order and sent some of the
cashed money to the Philippines via the store's Western
Union services. The customer came in the next week,
cashing the same amount of money and sending the
same amount of money to the same address. The busi-
ness owner noticed that the date on the money order
was also the same, which raised a red flag and authori-
ties were then notified. The business owner shortly after
discovered that the first money order cashed was sent
back by the bank as being counterfeit.
According to Officer Heine, the money order looked
legit. "The only way to tell that the money order was
counterfeit was to hold it up to the light and notice the
indicators such as George Washington's face not being
on the money order as it should have been. Another way

m
Republican candidate for the U.S. Senate Craig James was in Sweetwater on Tuesday, March 13, for a lively dis-
cussion on energy, jobs, education and economic development. James met with a focus group brought together by
Sweetwater Mayor Greg Wortham. Ken Becker, Executive Director of the Sweetwater Enterprise for Economic
Development (SEED), and Wortham provided James with background information on the various energy sec-
tors in and around Nolan County. James discussed his commitment to appropriate use of all U.S. energy sourc-
es. Sweetwater is a unique location for America's energy solutions, with world-class roles and initiatives here
in oil, natural gas, nuclear, wind, coal and solar energy. Shown are, from left to right, Kinsey Browning (senior

to tell if a money order is real is to hold a black light to it
and see a glow in the seal. Everything else on the money
order looked to be real."
The resident that cashed the money order is consid-
ered both a victim and a suspect in the case according
to Heine. "I am not sure if it can be prosecuted, as she
is also a victim in the scam, but the business owner was
the main victim in the scam."
The money order was made out for $975 and the one
cashing the money order was to keep $150 for them-

Industrial
Park updates
heard by
SEED Board
BY BELINDA SERRANO
Staff Writer
A number of updates were heard from the SEED
(Sweetwater Enterprise for Economic Development) staff
during the group's board of directors meeting held on
Monday morning, March 12, 2012 at the Chamber of
Commerce.
Executive Director Ken Becker gave two updates regard-
ing the Sweetwater Business Park to the board, one being
that updated appraisal numbers need to be acquired for
the industrial area. Following some discussion, the board
decided to look at similar properties in order to determine
the new number for interested clients in the future.
Lighting for the Business Park was also examined. Board
member Billy Whisenant, with assistance from two other
companies, offered recommendations for minimal lighting.
However, as the prices of copper, steel and concrete con-
tinue to rise, the pricing for the project changes as well.
The board is still determining what steps to take—
whether to go out for bids or work with Oncor, who made
a presentation on the matter during the December 2011
meeting—by comparing prices. Signs at the Business Park
will also play a role in considering the lighting, and Mr.
Becker stated that he will bring information to the board
at a later date.
In addition, an update was given on the five-year commit-
ment between SEED and Texas Tech University. Meetings
have been reported as going well and with the involvement
of local business Buzzi Unicem, the program was stated as
having has great potential.
