Free Throw Hoop Shoot*®
The Sweetwater Elks Lodge will be
having their annual Free Throw "Hoop
Shoot" contest on Saturday, Jan. 7, 2012
at the Sweetwater Intermediate School
gym. Registration will begin at 9 a.m.
with a 9:30 a.m. start. The contest is
open to all boys and girls ages 8 through
13. Contestant age groups will be deter-
mined by their age as of April 1, 2012.
For instance, if a contestant will be 7
years old on April 1, 2012, he is too
young to participate; if a contestant will
be 14 years old on April 1, 2012, he is too
old. if the contestant will be 8 or 9 years
old on April 1, 2012, she will shoot in the
8-9 age group. The same ruling applies
for 10-11 year olds and 12-13 year olds, in
which they will be placed in their respec-
tive category. Participants who shoot in
the wrong age category will be disquali-

Bahlman Cleaners is accepting dona-
tions for children in need. Coats, jackets,
sweaters, hoodies and anything consid-

Sweetwater Fastpitch Softball
Association
The Sweetwater Fastpitch Softball
Association will be holding an aluminum
can drive this off-season. Those wishing
to participate are asked to save empty alu-
minum cans to donate to the association.
Bring empty cans - crushed or not crushed
- to the bin located in front of The Water
Jug, located at 920 E. 15th Street, across
from Trinity Baptist Church. Can dona-
tions will be cashed in to help offset costs
during the 2012 softball season.
Woman's Forum
The Sweetwater Woman's Forum meets
every second Tuesday of the month at
the County-City Library. No lunch will
be catered, but members may bring their
lunch to the meeting.
Galvan Account
An account has been set up at Texas
National Bank for Triston Galvan, who was
in an automobile accident on Friday, Aug.
12, in Abilene. Triston is the seven-year-old
son of Joseph Galvan and grandson of Jose
Galvan of Sweetwater. Triston is presently
at the Pediatric Intensive Car Unit (PICU)
at Cook Children's Hospital in Fort Worth.
Money will be used for the family's travel-
ing and lodging expenses. For more infor-

Darrell Campbell Account
Donations are being accepted for Darrell
and Amber Campbell at First Financial
Bank, account number 10110053344.
Snyder Police Corporal Darrell Campbell
was recently injured in the line of duty. He
is a former Sweetwater police officer.
Gomez, Daniel Account
An account has been set up at Texas
National Bank to help the families of
Candice Gomez and her two children and
Bianca and Jeremy Daniel and their two
children, who lost their home and all of
their belongings in a house fire. The chil-
dren's ages are 13, 9, 5 and 16 months
and clothing sizes needed include sizes
2T and 5T. Size 3 diapers and wipes can
also be donated. Other clothing sizes are
men's size 32 pants and men's large shirts,
women's medium and large tops and sizes
9 and size 11 bottoms, men's size 10.5 shoes
and women's size 7.5 shoes. Donations can
be taken to 804 E. 15th Street or by calling
325-513-0243. Any household items and
furniture can also be donated. All dona-
tions are greatly appreciated.
VA Medical Center
Recently, the VA Medical Center in
Albuquerque, N.M. sent out letters to vet-
erans in Nolan County that receive care
there that cash would no longer be issued
for travel pay and reimbursement would be
made by check or electronic funds trans-
fer within 10 days of the completion of
travel. After working with several agen-
cies, this in not entirely true any longer.
According to Wanda P. Cox, Acting Chief,
Health Administrative Service, there will
be a contingency plan for any emergency
and these will be reviewed on a case-by-
case basis. The veteran will be provided
with funds to get him/her home with the
remainder being sent to them via check of
EFT. Veterans thinking they may need the
cash for their return trip from New Mexico
should contact Wanda P. Cox at 505-256-
6431 or 505-265-1711 ext. 4708.
Garrett Account
A benefit account has been set up at
Roscoe State Bank to assist Janice Garrett,
who lost all of her belonging in the fire
at Jack Lambert Apartments on May 15,

Torres Account
An account has been set up for Coralyn
Torres at First Financial Bank to help pay
for medical expenses. Coralyn suffered a
brain aneurysm on March 21. After being
in ICU for three weeks, she is undergoing
physical therapy at Transitional Learning

Veterans Assistance
Goodwill Industries of West Texas
was just awarded a grant from the Texas
Veterans Commission to support Veterans
and their families. This support includes
employment services and training, family
and individual counseling, financial assis-
tance, family and child service, emergency
care and assistance and transportation
assistance. They also work very closely with
all other military support organizations to
aid veterans and their dependents. They
work as a partnership to find whatever
