Family loses home to fire

A local family lost their home and its entire contents to a fire on Saturday, June 18, 2011, at 1401 Avondale. The
cause of the fire is still under investigation, but is thought to have originated in the family's carport, according to
Sweetwater Fire Chief Grant Madden. The blaze was contained due to the efforts of many firefighters and local
law enforcement officials assisting.
The home has been owned by Candice Gomez for almost seven years, who lived there with her two sons, ages 13
and nine, and also with her brother and sister-in-law, Jeremy and Bianca Daniel and their two sons, ages five
and 16 months. The families are currently living with other family members and are in need of many things, as
all of their belongings were lost in the fire. Household items, furniture, clothing and many other items will be
needed to help the families. Clothing sizes for the children include sizes 2T and 5T. Size 3 diapers and wipes can
also be donated. Other clothing sizes are men's size 32 pants and men's large shirts, women's medium and large
tops and sizes 9 and size 11 bottoms, men's size 10.5 shoes and women's size 7.5 shoes. Donations can be taken to
804 E. 15th Street or by calling 325-513-0243. All donations are greatly appreciated.

During the City
Commission meeting
at City Hall on Tuesday
morning, June 14, a spe-
cial, joint session was
held between the City
Commission and Nolan
County Commissioners
on the possibilities of
constructing a new law
enforcement center.
No public input was
allowed, but residents who
were in attendance for the
city meeting were invited
to sit in or ne talks among
the local officials.
Visits to newly construct-
ed area facilities have been
made and meetings with
architects and managers
have aken place already
by officials. A slight tax
increase would be one
result of the new facility,
which would be in compli-
ance with required stan-
dards and be an upgrade
from the current building.
The main purpose of 3
meeting, however, was for
the bodies of government
to discuss their feelings on
the project and to deter-
mine if steps to move for
ward should be taken if
both bodies were ready to
