Hamilton, Texas
tearing up Big 12
AUSTIN (AP) - After
everything went so wrong
for the Texas last season,
Jordan Hamilton apolo-
gized to his teammates.
While there was plenty
of blame to go around
after the Longhorns went
from No. l at midseason
to one-and-done in the
NCAA tournament, the
freshman felt he'd been
selfish with the ball.
"I was taking bad shots,
not playing hard all the
time, not understanding
how hard you have to
play on the college level,"
Hamilton said.
Once the apologies were
made, Hamilton not only
settled into being a bet-
ter teammate, he's become
the offensive leader on
the Longhorns' as they've
ripped through the first
half of the Big 12 schedule
and made a surprising rise
to No. 3 in the AP Top 25.
The more mature
Hamilton is leading Texas
in scoring (18.9 points),
rebounding (7.6) and has
become a better passer and
defender. His 55 assists
rank third on the team,
just three behind guard
Dogus Balbay. Defensively,
he elped shut down No.
22 Texas A&M's leading
scorer, Khris Middleton,
the Aggies' leading scorer,
in last week's 69-49 win-
Texas (20-3, 8-0) plays
at Oklahoma (12-10, 4-4)
tonight. When the teams
met in Austin on Jan.
15, Hamilton made five
3-pointers in a 20-point
Texas win.
At 6-foot-7, Hamilton
is a tough matchup for
smaller players on the
perimeter and he's big
enough to muscle inside
to post up defend-
ers. Hamilton has been
named Big 12 player of
the week three times and
will be a strong candidate
for player of the year.
^Obviously we knowhe's
a great scorer, and he's a
guy that loves to shoot,
loves to score," Oklahoma
coach Jeff Capel said.
That love to score is
part of what made things
tough for Hamilton last
season. When the bad
shots started to fly and
didn't stop, Hamilton,
his coaches and his team-
mates got frustrated.
Hamilton was a stand-
out player in high school in
Compton, Calif., and com-
mitted to Texas without vis-
iting campus. But he missed
playing his senior season
because had been declared
ineligible by California offi-
cials. Hamilton had essen-
tially flunked ninth grade
— he wasn't diagnosed with
a learning disorder until
11th grade — and was told
he had used up his high
school eligibility.

Brownwood beatdown
• lions dominate
Mustangs, 51-23
BYRON HOWELL
Sports Editor
BROWNWOOD — The Brownwood Lions dominated the
first and third quarters so much in Tuesday's 51-23 win
over Sweetwater that they could afford to rest their starters
and play their subs in the other two periods.
The victory — which improved the Lions to 3-3 in District
5-3A — came almost entirely on the strength of a 16-minute
stretch where Brownwood outscored Sweetwater 47-9.
Brownwood, which never trailed, used an early 14-0 run
to take a 23-7 lead at the end of one quarter before sitting
its starters down and scoring just two points the rest of the
half. The Lions still led 25-13, then went on another tear in
the third quarter as they outscored Sweetwater 24-2 after
putting their starters back in.
That gave Brownwood a 49-15 advantage, allowing the
Lions to put the subs back in the rest of the way as they
coasted to an easy win. Brownwood, which needs one more
win to clinch a playoff berth, was led by Greg Jefferson with
20 points and Marquos Barnes with 12.
Sweetwater (0-7), which has one game left, scored its
fewest points of the season. Paxton Kelley and Dylon
Adames had seven points, Ryan Linebaugh four, Taylor
Jones and Gabe Medellin two and Kevin Sepeda one.

BROWNWOOD — Brownwood's No. 18 Lady Lions lived
up to their state ranking Tuesday, running off the game's
first 10 points and never looking back in a 55-26 win over
Sweetwater that ended the regular season for both teams.
Patricia Wilson had 19 points for Brownwood (6-2), which
will be District 5-3A's No. 2 playoff seed. Brownwood also
stifled Sweetwater (1-7, 16-17) defensively, allowing just
single-digit scoring in each of the first three quarters.
Wylie (8-0) is the district champion, while Snyder (3-5)
took the No. 3 seed by beating Big Spring 44-32 in a play-
off-type showdown on Tuesday. Big Spring finished 2-6,
while Snyder earned its first postseason berth since 2008.
Brownwood set the tone for Tuesday's game immediately
as Sara Byrd and Sydnie Darden hit 3-pointers to fuel the
team's fast start. Wilson and Trinity Anson followed with
2-pointers before Sweetwater finally got on the scoreboard
on a bucket from sophomore post Kendra Crosson.
Junior post Alicia Finn led Sweetwater with seven points
while Taylor McKoy, Candice Hernandez and Crosson had
six apiece and Brittany Lashinski one. Lashinski, Aubra
Hendrix and McKoy are the only graduating seniors for
Sweetwater, which will return four starters next season.
Spurs cond nue 10 side while Rockets fizzle
Barring another appeal,
the ruling appears to clear the
way for the NFL to suspend
the players, which it has been
tlying to do since both tested
positive for a banned diuretic
1 2008. The players have
been fighting their suspen-
sions and could appeal the
latest decision to the state
Supreme Court.
NASHVILLE, Tenn. -
Titans coach Mike Munchak
has fired offensive coordi-
nator Mike Heimerdinger
along with two other assis-
tants as he starts to remake
his coaching staff a day after
taking over the top job.
Heimerdinger, who is
continuing cancer treatment
after diagnosed in November,
confirmed to The Associated
Press that he had been fired.
The Titans released a state-
ment a couple hours later that
Munchak also told defensive
assistant Rayna Stewart and
offensive assistant Richie
Wessman that they will not
be retained.
SOCCER
LONDON — David Beck-
ham has extended his train-
ing with Tottenham by
another two weeks. The for-
mer England captain was set
to return to the United States
this week but the Premier
League side says he will stick
around until Feb. 22.
The 35-year-old mid-
fielder will begin preseason
training with the Los
Angeles Galaxy on Feb. 24
in preparation for the Major
League Soccer season.
AUBURN HILLS, Mich. (AP) —
After yet another victory — by double
digits, no less — San Antonio coach
Gregg Popovich insisted his team isn't
ready for the playoffs.
"There are teams playing better than
we are," Popovich said. "Just because
we have the best record doesn't mean
we have the best team. To be that we
have to be better defensively,"
Tony Parker had 19 points and
seven assists, and the Spurs did take a
small step toward becoming a tougher
defensive team in the second half of a
100-89 victory over the Detroit Pistons
on Tuesday night.
The Pistons scored only 15 points in
the third quarter and never led in the
fourth.
DeJuan Blair added 18 points and
12 rebounds for San Antonio, which
improved its NBA-best record to 43-8.
Manu Ginobili scored 13 points for the
Spurs, and Tim Duncan contributed
10 points and 10 rebounds.
Will Bynum scored 12 of his 21
points in the fourth quarter for Detroit
(19-33). The Pistons kept it close in the
third quarter despite shooting 7 of 22
in the period, but San Antonio calmly
held them at bay in the fourth.
Bynum made a dunk and a 15-footer
to pull the Pistons within two at 80-78
with 6:37 remaining in the game, but
Ginobili and Matt Bonner made back-
to-back 3-pointers.
Bonner returned after missing 10
games with a right knee injury and
scored 10 points — eight of them in
the fourth.
San Antonio had set a record for
the franchise's best 50-game start, but
the Spurs struggled to pull away from
the Pistons. They were ahead 52-51
at halftime, but the lead didn't reach
double figures until the final minute.
Richard Jefferson scored 11 points for
the Spurs, whose balance proved to be too
much for Detroit. All five starters scored
in double figures for San Antonio.
Timberwolves 112,
Rockets 108
HOUSTON (AP) - Kevin Love set a
Minnesota record with his 38th con-
secutive double-double, scoring 20
points and grabbing 14 rebounds.
Love passed Kevin Garnett (2006)
for the team's double-double record.
Love's streak is now the longest since
Moses Malone had 44 in a row during
the 1982-83 season with Philadelphia.
Utah's John Stockton also had a
37-game streak of double-doubles in
1989.
Wayne Ellington added 18 points
for the Timberwolves, who snapped a
13-game losing streak to the Rockets
dating to January 2007. Minnesota
played without starters F Michael
Beasley (sprained left ankle) and C
Darko Milicic (strained left hip flex-
or).
Kevin Martin and Courtney Lee
scored 23 points apiece for the Rockets,
who were outrebounded 51-31.
