Retired fireman laid to rest
A funeral service was held for retired Sweetwater firefighter Loyd Levens on Thursday. On the way to
Sweetwater Cemetery, Loyd got to take his final "d< n Sweetwater's newest fire truck and was honored by
Sweetwater firefighters. On Oct. 23,1952, Loyd moved to Sweetwater and went to work for the Sweetwater
Fire Department. After 29 years, he retired in 1981. "Loyd Levens was a fireman who retired before I was
out of high school but was a great fireman and nice guy," said Sweetwater Fi re Chief Grant Madden. "I had
the privilege of helping I m after a fall and had met him a few other times. He was always a fun patient. It
is an honor to be able to do this for our guys."
2011 gasoline prices in Texas up again
Crude oil began trading Thursday at $91.86 per bar-

AAA Texas Weekend Gas Watch.
The average for a gallon of regular1 unleaded gasoline

fifteen cents below the national average. One mon

The least expensive gasoline is in San Antonio at
$2.89 a gallon, a one cent increase from last week. Texas
motorists are paying the most in Fort Worth at $2.97 a

What's driving the market?
> In early August 2010, during what usually is the peak
of the summer driving and vacation season, crude oil
sold for $72 a barrel. Oil is now almost $20 a barrel or
about 28% higher.
• Opening the day Thursday at $91.86 a barrel oil
returned to the more than $90-a-barrel level, after fin-
ishing three sessions below that mark.
• Oil deliver}- from Alaska's North Slope was halted
after a leak was discovered at a pumping station on the
Trans-Alaska pipeline. The 33-year-o - pipeline pro-
vides about 15% of the country's domestic oil produc-
tion. The pipeline currently is running, but not a full
capacity.
• Even as prices increase, gasoline usage is down.

Along with the new year,
the County-City Library has
also ushered in a new and
improved website.
The website has been on
the Internet for the past five
years and still has the same
address, www.sweetwaterli-
brary.org. However, library
director Becky Brock feels
that its features offer a more
uniform and organized look
to the site.
Upon accessing the web-
site, the home page features
the online catalog where
users can search for what
they are looking for. The
County-City Library is also
on Facebook, and a link will
lead you to their page where
you can "like" the library.
Also on the home page,
the hours of the library are
listed as well as the con-
tact information. Users can
easily send an email to the
library by clicking a link on
the home page. Brock stat-
ed that the >rary receives
several emails, especially
from out of state, of people
searching their genealogy in
Sweetwater.
Other new features
include a News and Events
page, where users can learn
more about what's going
on ir :he library. A link to
the Library Calendar is on
the same page, displaying a

TxDOT
improves
intersections
in Sweetweter
ABILENE, Texas -
A contractor for the
Texas Department of
Transportation will begin
installing and or improving
curb ramps at 42 locations
in Sweetwater on Monday,
Jan. 17. This project is part
of TxDOT's Statewide Curb
Ramp Program, Mary Beth
Kilgore, Abilene District
pul ic information officer,
said.
Curb ramps are being
installed or upgraded
at corners on the state
highway system, and
existing pe estrian sig-
nal buttons and marked
crosswalks will be made
accessible from the curb
ramps. These ramps will
be at locations where there
are raised curbs — with
or without sidewalks. At
locations where there
may not be sidewalks, it
enables pedestrians to get
off the streets at those cor-
ners and out of the traffic
flow.
Locations in Sweetwater
where these ramps will
be constructed include 34
locations on BI-70 south of
Lamar and north of Hailey
Street and eight locations
on FM 419 (Elm). The
public can expect intermit-
tent daytime la 3 closures
when the ramps are being
poured.
This project is expected
to last approximately two
months. Bontke Brothers
of Abilene is the contrac-
tor.
This statewide effort is
part of TxDOT's efforts
to comply with the pro-
gram access requirements
of the Americans with
Disabilities Act.
