Chilean artist Cecilia Vicufia's work-her poetry, her per-
formances and 'mise en scenes' explore metonym in lan-
guage. In contrast to a symbol's image linked to recogniz-
able cultural canons and representations, and distinct from
an iconic image, charged with given meanings or social
stereotypes, a metonym evokes the whole through the
parts. It traces cultural mores through such things as a
familiar gesture, a manner of installing things or qualities
