Rowland I Martin, Sr
Born to Helen Rowland Martin and Jerry Lee Martin Sr, in Bryan, Texas, on July 9, 1927, Rowland
married twice, first in 1953 to the late Lorraine King Martin with whom he had one son, Rowland Jr, and
later in 1983 to the late Lois Davis 1yus. Confirmed in the Episcopal church in 1949, he was a member of
Saint Philip's Episcopal Church in San Antonio, Texas, and Saint Luke's Episcopal Church, in Washington,
DC
Following his attendance in the public schools of Bryan, Texas, during the 1930's and 1940's, Rowland
attended Fisk University where he earned a BA degree in Music in 1948 and later earned a MA degree in
Piano and Music Theory from Prairie View A&M University in 1952. He completed coursework in the
Doctoral Music Program of the State University of Iowa from 1959 to 1961, in the Urban Studies Program
of Trinity University and in Arts Administration at The American University.
Rowland dedicated his life to a career in higher education from 1948 to 1997 He began as a Chair of the
Music Department at Saint Philip's College in San Antonio, Texas. During his tenure at Saint Philip's
College, he received recognition as a pianist and composer with original compositions including "Oasis of
Wonder," "Sonata for Violin and Piano," and "Mary, the Mother, a Lullaby for Treble Voices," among
others. He also served as church organist and choir director for many years at Saint Philip's Church.
After leaving Saint Philip's College he spent several years owning and operating JNJ Beverage Marts Inc.,
with stores in several San Antonio locations. Pursuing his ideal of community empowerment he accepted
positions with the National Citizens Participation Conference, in San Antonio, and eventually Washington,
D C., where he relocated in 1973
Rowland was involved in numerous fraternal, civic and social organizations throughout his life and especially
after his arrival to the District of Columbia. A founding member of San Antonio's Graduate Chapter of
Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity, Inc., Delta Rho Lambda, he later joined Washington's Mu Lambda Chapter
and became a life member of the Fraternity. He was a member of the DC Chapter of the Fisk Alumni
Association, a member of "The Literary Ten" book club, and an active member of Saint Luke's Episcopal
Church. He served as president of the Board of Directors of Camp Fire, Inc., Potomac Area Council, from
1987 to 1990
A vocal and untiring supporter of the District's arts and humanities community, Rowland also served
several terms from 1983 to 1992 as a Commissioner, and later as Interim Chair, of the D C. Commission
on the Arts and Humanities. He served terms as a member and as Chair of the D C. Community Humanities
Council from 1989 to 1997 In 1993, he acted as Cultural Ambassador for the District of Columbia to the
San Remo International Jazz Festival in San Remo, Italy.
Rowland is survived by his son, Rowland Martin, Jr, Esq., two half-sisters, the Reverend Dr Joan Martin
and Janet Martin Parker, and one half-brother, Jerry L. Martin, Jr., who are related to Rowland by his
father's second marriage to Gwendolyn Martin, his loving stepmother; his dear second cousin, Odessa Banks,
and first cousins, Tommy e Ruth Rowland and Gerald Vann Rowland, and a host of other family members
and cherished friends.
To all that knew him, Rowland was devoted husband, loving father, caring family member, and a beloved
friend and neighbor He loved God and strived always to serve God by uplifting humanity with his many
spiritual gifts. May he rest in peace.
