THE CANADIAN RECORD
Abraham Alexander and Gatl n win elear
maj or it tes in Saturday school board races
The turnout was heavy and the votes deci-
sive in Saturday's school trustee election. In-
cumbents Salem Abraham and Larry Gatlin
were x'e-elected to the board, and will be joined
by newcomer Betsy Alexander—the three vic-
tors in an eight-candi-
I date race that drew a
I near-record number of
1 voters to the polls.
Abraham was the
I top vote-getter with
I 421 total votes, while
I Alexander polled well
I with 417 and Gatlin
I with 309. Those proved
I to be commanding
I numbers, with Luke
I Thrasher drawing
I 168 votes for a dis-
I tant fourth-place, fol-
I lowed by John Walser
I with 153, Alan Hale
with 114, Janet Guth-
rie with 91 and Julie
Cooke with 82.
Overall, 639 votes were cast in the election,
representing nearly 33 percent of Canadian
ISD's 1,957 registered voters. A record num-
ber of those—276—voted early* a likely sign
of both voter interest and anticipated involve-
ment in Saturday's day-long Canadian River
Music Festival.
CIS]) business manager Cindy Moore
keeps voting records dating back to 1987, and
reported that only three elections in the last 24
years have seen heavier voter involvement. In
1987, with a seven-candidate contest for three
seats, 906 voters weighed in, while in 1991,
eight candidates vied for three places on the
board, and 734 ballots were cast.
By far the greatest interest was measured in
November of2006. The trus tee election the previ-
ous May had been cancelled because there were
no contested races, but an $8 million bond issue
that fall attracted 1,033 voters—and passed easi-
ly with 817 ballots in its fevor versus 216 opposed.
