It is difficult to know where you are going on the
road of life if you don't know where you have come from. For the
Canadian FFA Chapter that journey began in 1936. The empha-
sis for ag programs at that time was to train young men in the lat-
est techniques of production agriculture. After graduating from
high school, they were expected to return to the farm.
Travel forward to the school year of 2005-06. Much has
changed during the past seventy years. First, we must recog-
nize that the student being served by the program has changed.
Most do not come from the traditional farming/ranching back-
ground. The curriculum has changed dramatically in the past
twenty years to reflect not only the student being educated, but
also a shift in agriculture, as we know it. Agriculture truly is a
global industry. To compete in that world market, we must em-
brace changes in technology.
I would like to take a moment to outline the classes that will
be offered for this school year. I will be teaching two sessions of
Wildlife Management this fall. Students will have the opportuni-
ty to complete their Hunter Education Certification in this class.
The other course that I will be teaching in the field of natural
resources will be Range Management. The basis of ranching or
wildlife management starts with an understanding of the plants
being utilized. Two classes will be offered for those students that
are interested
in agricultural
mechanics.
They are In-
troduction to
Ag Mechanics,
and Building
Structures.
With all of the
new building
going on in
Canadian, we
will have the
opportunity to
see first hand
each facet of
construction. I also teach a middle school class. This is an explor-
atory class to introduce the students to the field of agriculture.
These students do receive high school credit for this class.
I am excited to announce that we will have our own website
up very soon. Thanks to corporate sponsors, such as Ford Motor
Company, every FFA Chapter in the state of Texas will have a
website. That address will be www. canadianffa. org.

Shopping at home benefits everyone. Local merchants can provide
things you can't get in the "BIG CITIES."
Have any "Big City" businesses ever bought tickets for your fundraisers or contributed to worthwhile community projects?
Have they always quickly exchanged merchandise or let you return merchandise for a cash refund without a receipt?
Have they ever bought a show animal from your child or supported them in a bike-a-thon?
Have they always been handy and willing to service their merchandise when you need it?
How many of their employees volunteer to help with your community service projects?
Have they ever special-ordered something for you and then given you a discount?
Have they ever bought ads in your yearbooks or tickets to your school activities?
Have they ever bought popcorn, cookies or magazines from your children?
Do they attend your school activities and root you on from the sidelines?
Have they ever put your posters in their windows?
Your local small merchants provide these extras because they are your friends and neighbors,
you see them everyday in your community. All they ask in return is a chance for your business!
