Voters say yes to bond issue; Cook
and Pollard elected to hospital board
Voters approved May 15 the Canadian In-
dependent School District's request for $3.5
million in bond revenues that will provide an
additional funding source for the 2004-2005
school year. The votes tallied 264 for and 26
against the bond issue.
Over the past several weeks leading up to
the election, Superintendent Frank Belcher
and members of the school board have empha-
sized the importance of the bond issue given
the uncertain future of the State's school fi-
nance system. Currently under the "Robin
Hood" system, the district paid $3.1 million in
recapture payments last year and is expected
to pay in $3.2 million this yeai-. The bond rev-
enues are not subject to recapture, thus al-
lowing the school to have adequate moneys
to fund regular operating expenses without
putting more of a strain on local taxpayers,
Belcher said.
In other elections, incumbent Jim Pollard
and newcomer David Cook were elected to the
Hemphill County Hospital Board of Directors
Saturday. Four candidates were on the ballot-
Pollard, Cook, Elizabeth Lankford and James
