THE CANADIAN RECORD
THURSDAY 18 MARCH 2004

ONCE A HAVEN on the north end of town, the duck ponds at
the County Recreational Center have become a repository for trash
and beer cans. The old picnic tables have fallen into disrepair, and
the grills for outdoor cooking are falling over. The chain link fences
along one end of the ponds are bent and rusting, and on the north
end a gate stands alone, the area to which it once gave entry now
rutted dirt with no fence in sight.
We applaud the effoils of our County Commissioners to plant
beautiful ornamental and shade trees around the once-barren
dance platform, but the neglect which is so apparent just up the
road detracts from the whole. We urge the Count)' to turn its atten-
tion to the duck ponds which attract so many weekend fishermen
and picnickers, and which serve as this community's welcome mat
to travelers from the north. Maybe then, the folks who use and enjoy
the park will follow their lead, and care a little more about the mess
they leave behind.
