Relay For Life raises $8,600 for
the American Cancer Society
SONYA MARTINEZ
The Hemphill/Lipscomb Relay For Life organizers
and participants were treated to beautiful weather for
the third local Relay held Friday evening through Sat-
urday morning, which raised $8,600 for the American
Cancer Society.
"Donations are still coming in," said Relay coordi-
nator Jackie McPherson. "And we will be very glad to
continue to accept donations of any amount."
Six teams were represented in the fundraising ef-
fort held at Wildcat stadium: WWFJ from the First
Christian Church, the Magic Dragons Motorcycle
Club, Hemphill County Hospital, City of Canadian,
BP, and Weight Watchers. The Hemphill County Hos-
pital team members raised the most money and re-
ceived recognition as the "Best Decorated Camp Site,"
with their Mardi Gras theme. "We greatly appreciated
all the hard work of everyone involved and the contin-
ued generosity of the merchants and businesses that
helped to make it a success," said McPherson. She also
noted that 306 luminarias were sold. "They were very
beautiful, and circled the entire track."
The first Relay held in 1999, also held at Wildcat
Stadium, raised $16,000 and the second in 2000, held at
the Hemphill County Recreation Complex in brisk
weather, raised $13,000. "Even though the money
raised was down and the number of people attending
was lessj" added McPherson, "we are still very proud
of our continued efforts to support the ACS."
