Dr. L. A. Sharp poses behind a desk with a candlestick rotary-dial telephone in his hand. There are several bookcases filled with bound volumes with similar titles behind him. He is wearing a suit and tie. Dr. Sharp was Chairman of the Graduate Council of N.T.S.C., now known as University of North Texas, from its inception in 1935 until his death in 1944, and before that had been on the faculty since 1925.

Denton's first public library opened on June 6, 1937, in Denton County Courthouse. It quickly outgrew the space and in 1949, the City of Denton donated a tract of land on Oakland Street for a new library.
