TOUMNC
EAST
TEXAS
!
By Bob Bowman
If you think alt p;ne trees in
East Texas stay green in the win-
ter, gurssatrain.
For almost 25 years, a lone pine
in the Harmony community, six
mites southeast of Woodville. has
stubbornly refused to reman;
Krocn in the cold months.
Instead, it turns a brillint gold
The tree looks like any other
jn the summer, but when win-
ter':; winds start whistling, a
golden tint b ginscreepmg out-
ward from the base of its pine
needles untii the green disappears.
As winter fades, the needles
graduaiiy turn green again. By
^)ting. the renegade evergreen
looks like its neighbors.
Tree and soil experts have
studied the tree and (he earth a-
round it. but have been unable to
explain its.-trungc chameleonic
act.
Deep in the pine forests of
western iLouisiana. a form "t Tex-
as capital lies buried with the
ruiti: of a stone presidio and the
b 'nr.". of Spanish colonists.
