Sometimes Christians seem to
have the idea that God selects
and chooses; that He showers
gifts and blessings upon a few,
sends trouble and misery to
piague others.
This, of course, is not true. God
does not bother to ptay games, as
indeed such activities would be
for Him.
instead, through His life upon
earth and death upon the cross,
God promises deliverance. He
shows the way. Come what may
in the way of troubie and temp-
tation, the Christian can find
needed strength in God's prom-
ise of deliverance.
As the prophet Joe! suggests,
we should more frequently "call
on the name of the Lord."

COMEONE has written that if
^ ail the world were music, we
long for one sweet strain of sitence
to break the endless song. And !
saw a poem years ago that glori-
fied silence and its great place in
the fitness of things. And if you
can remember any time of siience
in your life. You may also remem-

ber the healing that came upon
you with the touch of an infinite
calm.
But if you can find the place and
time of siience, fortunate indeed
you are. For out my way there
does not seem to be any place or
time of silence. When i congratu-
lated myseif that ! was living in a
quiet residence with little passing
in front, ! soon found there was
a back street where the roar of
traffic never ceases until about
midnight, and the rest of the time
until daylight is taken by the gar-
bage truck in front and some
other things.
And if 1 decide in the early
morning to go to town, as 1 ven-
ture out our resident place I at
once find that 1 am somewhat like
the man who charged in the Light
Brigade, with cannon ali around
them and in front of them voileying
and thundering, except that the
cannon about me travel aimost as
fast as the cannonballs of the
Crimean War and the cars are
larger than the balls or the guns
that shot them forth. "Be stilt and
know that 1 am God."

GRACE ABOUNDtNG
In a letter to his spiritual son,
j Timothy, Paul wrote, some 1900
years ago about his conversion:
"(1) was before a blasphemer,
a persecutor, and injurious, but
I obtained mercy because I did
it ignorantly in unbelief. And
the grace of our Lord was ex-
ceeding abundant." (I Tim. 1:]3,
14). And he follows this with the
now famous declaration:
"This is a faithful saying, and
worthy of all acceptation, that
Christ Jesus came into the worid
to save sinners, of whom I am
chief (Verse 15).
Upon reading these words of
Paul, those who know their
Bibles will immediately recall the
words of Rom. 5:20, 21: "The law-
entered. that the offense might
abound, but where sin abounded,
grace did much more abound:
that as sin hath reigned—so
might grace reign."
These two passages from the
pen of Saul have a closer con-
nection than may appear on the
surface. The Apostle Paul, once
Saul of Tarsus, had led his na-
tion and the worid in rebellion
against Christ. "As for Saul," we
read in Acts 8:3. "he made hav-
ock of the church," and he him-
self testified to the Galatians:
"Ye have heard—how that beyond
measure 1 persecuted the church
of God, and laid it waste" (Gal.
1: 13).
Yet God. in infinite mercy, had
saved Saul, not only for Saul's
own sake, but to make him the
living demonstration of His
grace. Thus, in writing to Timo-
thy. the apostle goes on to ex-
plain: "Howbeit. for this cause I
obtained mercy, that in me
first Jesus Christ might show
forth all longsuffering, for a
pattern to them which should
hereafter believe on him to life
everlasting" (1 Tim. 1: 16).
Let's take our places with Saul,
the sinner, and find salvation by
grace through Christ, the Savior.
"Believe on the Lord Jesus Christ
and thou shalt be saved."
