STATE HEALTH DEPARTMENT
DEMANDING REST ROOMS
BE KEPT SANITARY
Austin, June 9.—"The State Health
Department's three-month old cam-
naign against filthy rest rooms over
the state has been marked by splen-
did co-operation from the retail
business estabiishments involved,
the public at iarge, and the press.
Our department is so firmly con-
vinced that filthy rest rooms are a
major public heaith hazard that the
department's sanitary inspectors are
checking rest rooms as carefully as
they do other violations of sanitary
regulations," states Dr. Geo. W.
Cox. State Health Officer.
"We have served notice on all re-
tail establishments in Texas that
'hey must clean up their rest rooms
ind continue to keep them clean
under penalty of violating the State
Food and Drug Law, Article 693,
which carries a fine of not less than
en nor more than one hundred
doliars.
"Our sanitary inspectors have
been notified to assess this fine
whenever they find rest rooms
maintained without adequate sanita-
tion. The public and business es-
tablishments have been adequately
w,nrned. Any subsequent violations
wit) be dealt with through legal
channels.
"We want the public to co-opcratc
sit)'" us in this campaign. Such
iithy conditions as heretofore have
)cen prevaient over the state wili
lever again be tolerated. When the
iub!ic finds a rest room that is un-
anitary, whether it be in a cafe,
avern, filling station, retail es.
'nbliphment or bus station, they will
be doing their community a favor if
hey transmit this information di-
cctiy to the State Health Depart-
nent, Austin, so that necessary steps
lan be taken.
"Disease breeds in unsanitary rest
rooms and is spread from one person
to another, 'indiscriminateiy, under
cuch conditions. Faciiitics shouid be
available for washing the hands;
toilets must be sanitary and kept
that way. The rest room that does
not meet these minimum require-
ments is a rcflcct'.on on the es-
tablishment it serves and shouid be
so interpreted.

SANITATION WORK,
WELL UNDER WAY
IN THIS VICINITY
It may be true, as someone says,
that woman is so inconsistent and
contradictory that a carefui study of
j one wife is the same as several mar-
riages. But a study in a critical spirit
I might react on the student. There's
nothing so offensive as a chronic
knocker.
We are advised that a WPA crew
of 40 men are working in our city
and surrounding territory instailing
the State approved Sanitary Pit Type
Toilets. Anyone wishing to own a
toilet of this type may contact Mr.
Ed C. Houston for further details.
A sample model of this type toilet
may be seen and inspected at Mr.
Houston's shed in front of Alto Hotel.
It's there for your inspection and ap-
proval.
Fiy time is here. Typhoid fever
time is here. Germs breed more its
hot weather. Cieanliness is Codii-
ness, so let's clean out the oid open
back toilet and have a Sanitary Pit
Type Toilet while WPA is furnish-
ing the tabor. You furnish all ma-
terial, WPA witt furnish all labor.
The cost of material wili run from
$6.00 to $16.00, depending on the
amount of second hand materia! you
have that can be used.
Mr. D. B. Byrd, who is Project
Superintendent of the WPA Sanita-
ton work, states that orders for Pit
Type Toilets are coming in faster
than the concrete slabs can cure.
Therefore he asks the peopte to be
as patient as possible. It takes seven
days for a concrete slab to cure suf-
ficiency to handte. He states that he
appreciates the co-operation the
peopte are giving this project and
hopes to make the city of Alto and
the surrounding country one hundred
per cent sanitary.
