POSTOFFICES IN TEXAS.

Metropolitan Job Print, New York. N. Y.]
The postoffices in Texas are divided into four classes,
the first three being called presidential postoffices. for the
reason that when the salary of a postmaster reaches the
sum of one thousand dollars, the appointment by law vests
in the president. In the fourth class are found nearly all
the offices; the salary being less than one thousand
dollars, the postmaster is appointed by the postmaster-
general. The first-class contains all offices where the
salary is at least three thousand dollars ; the second class
runs from two thousand to three thousand dollars, and the
third-class from one thousand to two thousand dollars.
Total population of the United States as per U. S.
census of 1900. was 76.000,000 ; of Texas, 3,048.710.
The total number of postoffices in Texas. November 1,
1900, was 3,032, of which 7 are first-class ; 24 second-class ;
125 third-class ; 2,876 fourth-class ; 156 presidential offices.
The total number of Money Order offices was 1.107.
There are 22 cities in the State which have free de-
livery service—Austin. Cleburne. Corsicana. Dallas. Deni-
son. El Paso, Fort Worth, Gainesville, Galveston. Green-
ville. Hillsboro, Houston. Laredo. Marshall. Palestine.
Paris, San Antonio, Sherman. Temple. Tyler, Waco and
Weatherford.
