MIAMI BEACH, Fla., Feb. 25 I
1A I*)— An unidentified prowler en-j
tered Jack Dempsey's room here
about 5 a m. today and .shot once |
at. the former heavyweight chain- j
pion, the bullet going wide.
Dempsey made a report of the at'- j
fair to police laic this morning, j
Dempse) was sleeping with Floyd (
Fltzsimmons of Detroit, at the home I
oI Harry Moire on ihe ocean front!
af Miami Beach, lie told police. He
awakened about ■> a. m. and saw the
figure of a man silhouetted in a
window opening to the street. Demp-
sey said be thought the man was
his host until Eilswimmon.s beside
him called out:
"What do you want?"
The man at the window replied in
r, grufi tone:
'Turn on those lights," and ad-j
dressed a supposed accomplice in
the hallway, said "Come on in, Joe." ;
When the man spoke Dempsey said
hi leaped from the bed, and Ihe in-
titule!' retreated, firing wildly as he
backed out the window.
The bullet, from a .38 calibre re-1
velvet', buried itself in the wall
about knee high from the floor.
Dempsey and Fitzsimmons said
they did not follow the intruder be-
cause they were unarmed anil there
were no lights on the grounds. They
did not telephone police at that time i
because it would have been necessary
to go through a doorway in the di-,
rcction from which the prowler and
his supposed accomplice approached.
Dempsey said.
The theory was advanced that tlie j
man was a burglar and that he did
not know he was entering a room
occupied by Dempsey.
Two plain clothes men have been
assigned to guard Dempsey.
Dempsey was quoted by friends as-
saying he believed two men intended
to kidnap him and hold him for ran- j
som, until after the Sharkey-Strib-
ling fight. The men returned to the
Moir home a half hour after tlicir
visit, flashed the lights of their an-j ed men one with
tomobile on the house and drove ianother with a
away, Dempsey said.

AUSTIN, Feb. 25 (AP)—The sen-
i ate today engrossed the Holbrook, or
! governor's penitentiary concentration
! measure by a vote of 16 to 8 with
I three pairs.
Administration leaders were una-
ble to muster the necessary four-
j fifths vote to put the bill on third
reading and final passage.
The house finally passed the
Young-Turner-Loy bill, providing for
location of the system on farms now !
owned below Houston, by a vote of
it 5 to 22 soon after the senate's ac-
tion. The house bill will now como
to the attentioy of the upper house
before the Holbrook bill is consid-
ered on final passage, thus compli-
I eating the situation.
II The vote on engrossment follows:
For, Beck, Greer, Holbrook, Horns-

"Love is the greatest thing in all
the world. I consider life worth liv-
ing, simply because I am in love,
and love is the only thing that does
make life worth living."
I regarded the speaker, a slightly
built, blonde-haired girl, sitting on
the edge of her bed in a downtown
hotel, in amazement. Could this be
the girl who was alleged to have
shot and killed a boy friend only a
few days ago?
They had told me that this was
Edna Robinson, the girl whom, a few
days before, had been released from
jail on a bond of $3000 following
the fatal shooting of
a hotel room, but it
