WHEN CRUDE RISES
Immediate renewal of oil
operations on a lar^e scale
was not predicted yesterday
by officials here, but all of
those interviewed expressed
the opinion that another rise
in crude was due soon and
wtih this rise the major com-
panies would again start capa-
city production here. If
such a orediction is true, Bor-
der will soon be booming as it
was before the shut-down
and the sudden influx of popu-
lation will be experienced here
as it has been known in the
early history of the field.
The oil shut-down has been
felt in all fields. Cities have
suffered a tremendous loss of
population and many merch-
ants have been forced out of
business, but in Borger there
have been enough subsidiary
industries to make the city
thrive and continue to grow.
Some merchants have been
pessimistic and some have de-
cide they could do better
elsewhere and have moved
away.
In any form of business the
main interest is to make all
the money that can legitima-
tely be made. When a boom
starts a merchant in an oil
city is swamped and he wears
a broad smile as he totals his
days' business in the evening.
When the boom slacks, he be-
comes grouchy at times and
is hardly content with the
business, recognized to be bet-
ter than in other towns at its
worst.
Fewer people and more
stores result in strong compe-
tition. Friendly competition
is favorable to any business.
It keeps both stores on their
toes and the consumer is bene-
fitted by the competition, and
at the same time the merchant
learns something about hand-
ling his stock carefully and
getting profit which he has
formerly wasted.
Merchants with competition
know the value of advertising.
They have something to sell
and if they are worthy of be-
ing called merchants are
proud of their merchandise.
Telling the community what is
for sale and permitting cus-
tomers to compare products
is one of the first essentials of
successful merchandising.
Those who have stayed in
Borger and weathered the
slight depression brought on
by the shutdown will reap the
rewards of their spunk and
community spirit in the next
few months when the price of
oil returns. Borger has many
permanent residents, who will
make their homes here for
year. These men have read
of and know advertised stores
nd stores which are out for
service and for the betterment
and upbuilding of Borger.
